No one knows for sure why we yawn, but there are a couple of theories. Interestingly, the one you mention (increasing oxygen supply) has been proven incorrect.
Other theories is that yawning contributes to the group that it's time to rest. Certainly we yawn when we're tired. However, we also yawn when we're not tired, so this theory seems rather weak to me.
We yawn when we're bored, but we also yawn when we're not.
Animals yawn and if my dog is any indication, to a much greater extent than humans.
Observation shows that yawning does seem to be contagious. This fits nicely with the theory of yawning as a means of alerting your neighbors it's time to sleep but as noted, there are problems with this theory as well

I read that the reason they are contagious has something to do with pre-historic instinct. A yawn is a show of aggression, a bearing of teeth, if you will. Much akin to a Gorillas beating their chest or Antelopes butting heads we must match the attack on our dominance. Is this valid, King? It would seem that only men would show this trait, being that way back in the caves we would have been the ones fighting for dominance. That's the only hole I see in the theory.

BLAKJEEZIS - Even after we evolved into hunter gatherer societies and most societies adopted a model of men as the hunter and women the gatherer (so that women could be closer to babies to nurse them), 90% of the diet was composed of what was gathered. Women had much more to do with survival than the public perception of the man being the "Great Hunter."
