Gvac and I have debated this..it's difficult to pick one band. Who is the greatest American rock band?
The Beach Boys?
Aerosmith?
Allman Brothers?
The Doors?
Anyone? (individual artists don't count!)

that's easy...

GRAND FUNK RAILROAD

> sold 10 million albums in 1971 alone
> selling out stadiums when their music was only being played on college radio
> 72 hours to sell out Shea Stadium, Beatles took 7 weeks (did you see "Behind The Music" They had to call Engineers in because they thought Shea Stadium might come down, the Stadium was actually bouncing... That's what you call getting ROCKED!)
> If their Manager didn't tell Rolling Stone Magazine to go F themselves then they would have gotten much more positive publicity. Plus, they were young(all were 20yrs old) and cocky like when they wouldn't leave the stage to let Zepelin on cause the fans were going nuts for them, not a good move...
that happened to be the last time they opened for anyone...
> they have a song called "We're An American Band" it went to number 1, that should end all arguments lol
:)

not saying they were the greatest musicians but they rocked and had soul...
get the album on my sig and you will not be dissapointed...

their BEST stuff is Live...

It's always been fascinating to me that an art form as American as Rock 'N' Roll was stolen away from us by those God awful Brits.

Whenever anyone discusses the greatest rock band ever, the Beatles, Stones, Zeppelin, etc. always come up, and they're all British.

Of course Elvis is the King, but discounting solo performers, I'd have to say the Beach Boys, the Ramones, and Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers all warrant serious consideration.

Creedence, the Allmans, and even Skynyrd also paved the way for "country rock" and "Southern Rock" of which I'm a big fan, so I could see including them also.

Thank God I don't have to be the King of VH Marks in another thread. The brothers might be Dutch, but the band was pure Pasadena-All-American Rock fueled by All-American Alcohol. Maybe not the best of all time, they didn't exactly have the effect on music that the Beach Boys did, but they certainly deserve to get more mention than they tend to receive. Eddie might be a prick, but that doesn't erase what he did for the electric guitar...the essence of American Rock-n-Roll.

I never said they were my "heroes". I never even said they were my "favorite" band. I haven't had one of those since I was about 15. The thread is about the "Greatest AMERICAN Rock Band", and that's what my response was in regard to.

If you think calling a band a "third rate bunch of hacks" makes it so, then you've got a lot to learn. No one ever claimed the Crowes were "original", and as far as I can tell they wear their influences on their sleeves. And so what? Like Aerosmith wasn't aping The Stones? And The Stones weren't aping Chuck Berry and every American Blues artist in history? It's all been done before... the trick is to take those influences and make your own music, and I think the Black Crowes have done that admirably. As did Aerosmith and The Stones.

And for a "third rate bunch of hacks" they did an awfully good job of backing up Jimmy Page a couple years ago.

Nobody asked if they were your "favorite" band. I was just wondering if you think that the black crowes are the greatest american rock band. Thats what the thread is about, and I thought "wow, he must have no knowledge of music history to say that." Thats all.

How nice of you to insult a person's opinion. Sounds to me like you just rehash what others have already said about the Black Crowes. I suppose your extensive knowledge of music history has led you to believe the Grateful Dead was chock full of talent, huh?

You're first vote was for the Ramones, who I won't say anything bad about. Then you stick up for the Grateful Dead, the original jam band, and you call Eddie's solos overplayed & endless?! You've got balls.

The only thing that stinks around here is your opinion on music...but, you are entitled to it.

First, I am not a fan of the Dead, but I respect their ability to jam as a band.
Second, Eddie is the very definition of a "wanker". That is someone who stands on stage ALONE for half an hour jerking off his guitar. That shit sucks worse than drum solos.

Third, you're kidding me right? you cant tell the difference between a band jamming together and a fucking attention demanding show-off?

You are probably a Malmsteen fan.

An attention demanding show-off? You can call him a prick all you want, but if someone pays to see Van Halen live, they're not falling asleep during Eddie's solo. They want to see it. True, I can do without the drum & bass solos, but they cut them out the last time they toured, & I don't expect that those will be back if they ever tour again.

But what I take most offense to is being called a Malmsteen fan...that's where you crossed the line. Eddie might have a bit of an ego problem since he quit drinking (again), but he doesn't run around calling himself a virtuoso...others do it for him.
