Get rid of the post counts.

Too many people are so obsessed with them and are making too many meaningless posts just to boost some stupid number.
Even that other board doesn't have post counts, last I looked. It's been said many times, it's not the "quantity of posts, as much as the quality". Besides...If you told someone outside of this board that you have almost 1000 posts...they'd say "you have what on a what now?".

Maybe if there was an internal counter so people could still have their status changed from PPP to RR etc...but not a displayed one.

Of course this will be an unpopular opinion with many of you. But that's how a revolution gets started. Always by the unfunny, unpopular guy.

At least I'm not dressed up like an Indian this time.

I hear what you're saying, Skid, and to a large part I agree.

We can't control what members think about post counts, however, and even if they (the post counts) didn't show I think some would continue posting incessantly hoping their "status" would change from "Pinellis Park Pervert" to "Reef Regular."

In the meantime, all we can do is continue to stress that post counts really are meaningless and hope that it sinks in to at least the majority of the members.

Hey even I, the ultimate postwhore of the postwhores agrees with skid's statement.

I'm at 6,000+ posts and well as others have said, who really cares... its just a number.

But on the other hand, I think it is still nice though because you get to congratulate people on this minor achievement (sadly this maybe the highlight of someone's day or week). Sometimes announcing to the board you made a certain number, 100, 500, 1000 and getting some love from the regulars makes people feel more welcome which may in turn lengthen their stay. That's just how I see it. I hope that made some sense cuz I just woke up from a long night at a wedding/reception.

I don't mind either way. It's in your hands. mods and administrators... exercise your power of veto or let the count continue.

...and if you want it to be an equal vote for all the members involved, what about throwing it out on the Voting Booth.

I have no problem with getting rid of the Post Counter. Its like a novelty. Its there and you like it, untill you see people who signed up after you have more posts. The only way i seriously see keeping post counts is if, A) the RF.Net Compound Idea becomes reality, or B) Majority of people want it to stay. I say Add this topic as a vote, and have the members choose.

i personally think this is a great idea. i mean, i cant say that i wasnt just slightly excited (for no good reason, really) when my status was changed, but i never posted something i felt was unnecessary or extraneous in order to get there. i think that getting rid of the post counts would do the board a world of good... and i'd actually propose that we get rid of the status, as well... as was discussed earlier, people will still post whore to get their status to change, regardless of whether they can see their post count. i dont really see the need for it at all. anyone who's around the board regularly know who the other regulars are and all. i dont see where it's relevant.

that all said, i think it's interesting and probably worthy of note that the vast majority of people checking in in favor of abolishing post count are people with reasonably high post counts (ie RRR's). that could be either:

a) because (as sheepy said) post count excitement seems inversely proportional to your post count. if this is the case, maybe it's not fair of us to begrudge newer memebers the post count fun we once had, or...

b) people who have been around the board longer or who post more often have seen the decline in post quality of late. if this is the case (and i suspect it just might be), i say down with post count.

I have almost 5k posts and have never once posted bullshit to raise the number (not that I haven't posted bullshit), nor have I posted about that number. When I first joined the board there were a few "I hit 1000 posts" threads kicking around. Being a newbie, I just assumed that it was a regular thing to do. So, when I hit 1000, I became guilty of doing the same thing. By then I learned that posting was about quality than quantity.

I vote to keep post counts.

1) there really has not been a severe problem with people post whoring out side of simply joking around. Therefore the whole "why fix it if it ain't broken" philosophy comes to my mind.

2) everyone enjoys watching there post counts go up. I don't care how many people on this thread say that post counts don't matter. If no one likes post counts then why do people celebrate when they hit a number? (aka 1000) - and why do those threads get 30 or more replies???

- in my tenure at rf.net when someone hits a post count milestone it becomes an opportunity to roast that poster, which is something I enjoy to read and hate to see gone.

3) it DOES show seniority, and that in my opinion is a GOOD thing.

People on this message board don't abuse there seniority here, and that is a good example to show new people. That now matter how long your here or how many posts you have we are all equally heard.

Taking away posts counts would hinder that.

4) And I don't know about all of you, but I am excited to see who will hit 10,000 first!!!
