With the way technology is progressing, do you think that it's right that someday we may be able to change our children's personality and physical traits before they're even born? Or is it a violation of nature?

I will make sure that my daughter has no vagina.

My son's penis, however, will be enormous. I want something to choke on. Oh wait...I've said too much...

What parent wouldn't use biogenetics as a means of giving their child every advantage they could.

Imagine a world where you could ENSURE that your child would be born intelligent, free of heart disease, and other medical problems and reasonably good looking.

Bear in mind, however, that we are much more than the sum total of our genes. Socialization, environment and other factors go into making up our personality and "who we are."

You ask if it is "a violation of nature?" What exactly do you mean by that? God? Or perhaps natural selection as in evolution.

For hundreds of millions of years (2 billion by some counts) nature has been selecting for survival traits in all organisms. The evolution of humans has put us in a position where our intellect has evolved to the point were we have an understanding of how these processes work and we are able to select for our own traits. That seens to be one step better than "natural" selection, as it is selection w/a directed purpose.

People often have a hard time remembering that homo sapiens is not the end result of evolution. Our species originated only about 150,000 years after many false starts. We continue to evolve and will do so for the indefinite future.

Even selecting for traits does not end evolution as the bulk of evolution takes place by mutations. The vast vast vast bulk are harmful, but rarely one comes along that is beneficial and are selected for. Eventually, parents will want to encourape that gene into their baby as well.

We're living in wonderful times. It is ever more apparant way it is so important to get anti-intellectual, technophobic, right wing religious yahoos like Bush out of office.
