Not a stupid question at all.

You want to keep your enemies really close so you can keep your eye on them. Your friends don't have to be as close b/c you trust them.

If memory serves me correctly, the line comes from Sun Tzu's "The Art of War."

I haven't read it in quite some time, but it's an amazing book, especially considering how long ago it was written.

GVAC you're right, it's from Sun Tzu.

I read Machiavelli's "The Prince" around the same time. Although both books are excellent and still relevant, I find The Prince more useful in understanding motivations.
