...taste testing urine on the street from other dogs when i walk him. the damn mutt is really annoying me with this nasty shit. normally i dont pay attention to him when he is looking for a spot to piss but now i have to watch him like a hawk so he wont do it. what i mean by taste testing is that its like if you were to lick a lemon to see how sour it is and still find it sweet. so he gets kind of a prune face when he slowly licks the urine and his mouth trembles and salivates afterwords. he never used to do this before. what should i do HordeKing?

First I'd ask your vet to make certain that this isn't a symptom of a potentially serious malady.

However, it sounds to me like normal (albiet weird) canine behavior. You can train him to stop it, by giving him a gentle correction (a yank on a chain or blowing a whistle) anytime he tastes urine, and by giving him praise and a treat when he resists temptation.

Start with constant negative reinforcement and constant positive reinforcement. Once the dog understands what you want from him, switch to intermitent positive reinforcement (every once in a while) as it is more effective. For the life of your dog you'll have to give constant negative reinforcement to ensure the behavior is not relearned.

It's a territorial thing usually. Your dog is trying to remove the scent of another dog's urine. See this website http://www.pets.ca/forum/showthread.php?threadid=58

Eating another dogs feces is something entirely different. They usually do it if they have digestive problems.

thanks for the info guys. my dog was neutered as an adult so that might have something to do with him being a urine sipper. thank God he aint a pooper scooper though cause i would have to throw him out on the street if he was.

Don't feel bad, Dr. Bob. I used to have a newfoundland (the most adorable dog). Whenever I would shampoo him, he almost always upon the next walk would find dog feces and then lay in it. I loved him too much to get mad at him.
