Nassau County and Breast Cancer

Today I was at the doctor's for my annual physical. Since I'm 35, the topic of breast cancer and mammograms came up. I told him I was concerned since I grew up in Nassau County, LI. The breast cancer rate in this area is far higher than any breast cancer rate in the country. He said that studies have been done and it seems that women who stayed in Nassau county all their lives had a higher risk of breast cancer than those who lived there for a while and moved away (I no longer live there). Is this true? Where can I find out more about this?

(It's kinda scary-- four blocks away from me, on my best friend's street, all the women who live on all sides of her parents have had breast cancer.)

FUZZYBUTT - Nassau County is one of the breast capital centers of the US. <P>
I am unfamiliar with any studies comparing women who grew up in Nassau County and left as opposed to women who lived their whole life in Nassau County. The data from the studies I've read use the address of the person at time of diagnosis in compling their data. <P>
However, there is a big study due out later this year (begun in 2000) that may have included the specific criteria you referred to. <P>

It's particularly interesting to see the theories of the etiology of breast cancer in addition to the known risk factors of genetics and obesity. The environment is being given a great deal more thought. Chemicals, electromagnetic fields, smoking (including second hand smoke) are all being investigated. <P>
