Well, it's not really so new but it is cool!
These bands remind me of old faves like The Standells, Count Five, The Seeds etc.
This "garage" aesthetic has been alive and strong forever, but only now is getting the attention it deserves.
Great raw tunes, bad attitudes, and fashion gimmicks!
Rock is Back!

Great raw tunes, bad attitudes, and fashion gimmicks! Rock is Back!

Oh please God no.

Out of all of them the White Stripes are the best by far, I can't stand The Strokes and that "we don't even want to perform" attitude, it's just bothersome. It's not bad music, it's just not a particularly fantastic genre, but definetly a welcome break from the rap/pop getting top 20 play.

I like this bands, just for the sheer fun of their music, but it's really let me down as a movement. This is the first big rock "movement" since the whole damn thing began that is firmly faced in the opposite direction of the future of music. At least Radiohead got the plot and is trying to do something new.

And you left out the best of these nouveau-garage bands BY FAR, the incomparable Black Rebel Motorcycle Club...

I think lumping all of those bands together and labeling it as a 'movement' is inaccurate. (Of course, one could argue that this usually *is* the case with New Rock Movements, but whatever.) I don't think there is a consistent sound or aesthetic among these bands. The Hives are the New Blur, The Vines may as well have called themselves 'New-Vana', The White Stripes are post-Television Replacements-heads (and possibly incestuous siblings) and the Strokes are Ashton-Kutcher-style pretty-boy Nick-Gilder throwbacks, minus the gender confusion. Which is not to say I don't like any of them. I just don't think their debuting around the same time qualifies them as a 'movement'.

The one comment that someone made about Television and stuff is right on. These bands make me sick. Anyone ever hear THE MAKE-UP? Or Nation of ULYSSES for that matter?THE HIVES wanna be the MAKE-UP so bad it hurts. Ian Sev. must be losing his shit watching this band blow up. THE VINES on the other hand are just horrid. Did you see them on the MTV awards? Like that singer guyknocked over his amp. I wanted to slap him around. Do people buy into this crap? I guess so. As for the STROKES, go buy the first MODERN LOVERS record. Trust me, it is much better. Better hair-cuts too. All pop music now sucks. It is kind of depressing. Like how the fuck are bands like PUDDLE OF MUD, and THREE DOORS DOWN selling millions of records? It makes no sense at all.

Hey runnerkid, just because you have a bigger record collection than some people, chill. I know of all the bands you mentioned and they are all of the very independent variety. You have to want to find those bands.
If being exposed to the strokes causes someone to pick up a velvet underground cd, then it's a great thing.

ANYTHING to finally put the end to this limp dick rap/metal shit.

What makes no sense is that you claim to despise the latter bands, but then trash the bands that are pushing them off the charts. These garage-rock bands may be redundant, but at least they keep it short and don't whine.

First of all, what do the charts have to do with anything if we are talking about personal tastes in music? I can think both PUDDLE OF MUD, and THE VINES suck.

Second of all, I was not trying to come off as a music snob. I was just trying to say that these bands are called "new rock" and they are just carbon copies. Some of them don't even try to hide it. The Hives, for example..there is no doubt that they have an "original look." But is it? Look at Ian Sveonious's last 2 bands, not counting C.C.C...

Nation of Ulysses:
http://www.southern.com/southern/band/ULYSS/pics/17971L.jpg

The Make-Up:
http://www.dromo.com/fusionanomaly/make-up.jpg

Now go download any N.O.U. song. The HIVES are a fucking carbon copy. Music and look. That is the point.

And last..the first MODERN LOVERS record is one of the best records of all time. They did slack alot after that line up split, but for one record they were gold.

Before we get into the
semi-udnerground DC bands,
let's not forget about the bands
back in the 60's who already
rocked this sound!

Without even going
underground: Kinks, MC5, and
the Stooges.

runnerkid seems a little too obsessed with the Dischord/DC scene.
If you're gonna do that then Government Issue was the best band to emerge from it. How about Embrace? Rites of Spring? All great but not part of the garage scene. N.O.U and the rest came from the emo/hardcore scene, not garage.

Not true at all. He's just pointing
out how there were specific
bands from whom the
strokes/whitestripes/vines/hives
etc. directly copied. The fact that
the Make-up and the Nation were
from DC doesn't mean a damn
thing. He was just giving very
specific examples.

And anyway, the best bands to
come out of DC were MINOR
THREAT and Bad Brains.

So these bands sat down and said "I want to sell 1000 albums and wallow in fanzine hell just like the make-up"?

Read my first post in this thread for these bands roots, and throw in a healthy dose of old Rolling Stones while you're at it.

Hahahahahahhahahaha. You are missing the point. This has nothing to do about the regional structures of "scenes", if you will. It has nothing to do with DC. I know that The Hives are not ripping off Jawbox, but I know they are ripping off other bands mentioned.

Not that it was even what I was talking about at all, but do you honestly think EMBRACE are a better band than MINOR THREAT, FUGAZI, TEEN IDOLS, VOID, BAD BRAINS, DAG NASTY, or SWIZ??? Much less any of the old Simple Machine bands.

Now who's coming off as a music

your music history homework, but
my point was that without even
going into the lesser known
bands, one can or should be able
to realize that these bands (The
"New Rock", as you put it) are
direct ripoffs of other not so
obscure bands.

A lot of people probably haven't.
I've heard all the bands you mentioned(played with a couple actually) and most people haven't.
It's not about old scenes anymore(talk to me about BOSTON/DC 81-82) it's about getting real rock noticed again, don't you think?

The Hives are the New Blur.

hell no. blur's a pop rock band who sound great cuz they're british pop rock. the hives sound a lot harder than blur. they've also been doing this kinda music for years.

the strokes may be assholes, but so's eddie vedder. it doesnt stop a lot of people from listening to pearl jam.

dont care much for the white stripes but the vines just suck. the lead singer looks like lance bass with unkept hair. and he sings about as well too.

Thank god rap/hip hop doesnt have this problem of everyone sounding the same anymore. I turn on WHFS and DC101 and hear the same crap all the time and cant discern one from the other.
Thats why i stick with: Outkast, Wu Tang and Def Squad because they never sound the same from album to album

This "garage" aesthetic has been alive and strong forever, but only now is getting the attention it deserves.

This is just the new tool for the music industry, the whole boy/girl band thing has kind of slowly been fading out now its all these 'garage' bands that for the most part, all sound the same. They come out with 1 or 2 hits, and then fade away. The music industry needed something new, now their going with 'garage' bands and whiny girl singers who suck and say they are "punk" like avril laivdif, this will soon fade away and something new will come along, like garage disco.

and its true that Minor Threat and the Bad Brains kick/kicked serious ass

Sure, there is some BAD Death Metal, just like ANY style of music. There's LOTS of Death Metal I HATE too.

And sure, if bands have fun, that's cool with me. I just HATE that sound. Crap music.

You think METAL sounds the same? All I hear in this new "invasion" is some Art School Faggots yelling about nothing with the same recycled riff behind it.
