View Full Version : And The Winning Lotto Numbers Are... Scary
ChickenHawk

Does anyone believe this?
Tonight's winning lotto
numbers are 9-1-1... in that
order. I've narrowed this
phenomenon down to two
possibilities... the lotto is
either rigged, or this is
some sort of message from
God or those who died
today. The odds are
ridiculous, and this is just
WAAAY too eerie. Rigged?
Or a message from God?
you decide.

Think of it this way: with all of the possible events that occur in all of the possible places between 12:00am and 11:59pm on September 11, the probability of SOMETHING weird happening SOMEWHERE is so much higher than the probability of NOTHING weird happening that I'd be more impressed if someone couldn't find a coincidence. We're just wired to focus on the roughly 1 in 500 chance (there were two drawings) that 911 was picked; we tend to ignore all of the normal stuff that happens to us and interpret the abnormal as being mystical.
EDIT: ...but this is just plain freaky:

What's worse, the winning numbers, or Betting 9-1-1 ON 9/11?
Or the WORST, is collecting it! You gotta look like a terrorist betting 9-1-1 on 9/11.

HORDEKING - The reason I
omitted the possibility of
random chance is simply
because the chances of
those numbers coming up
on that date in that exact
oder are almost as slim as
the chances of our universe
being formed at random.

the chances of those numbers coming up on that date in that exact oder are almost as slim as the chances of our universe being formed at random C/H the date and order of the numbers are independent probabilities, i.e. the fact that it came up 9-1-1 on 9/11, in that order, doesn't mean anything statistically. However it is weird, ironic and does make me wonder about some sort of yet unknown cosmic order.

Close to 6,000 people bet on 9-1-1 that day. Coincidence. The same day that flight crashed into the Bronx last Novemeber, the NY lotto numbers were the same as the flight.

Further freakiness, in the Yankees Orioles game last night, the two teams scored a combined 9 runs over 11 innings...
I think we should consider the possibility we're all just a small part of some really, really, really, big kid's science project...

Coincidence. The same day that flight crashed into the Bronx last Novemeber, the NY lotto numbers were the same as the flight.
The flight (587) crashed in Queens.
I highly doubt God is using the NY state lottery as a communication tool. He told me himself through the NJ state lottery he would never do anything that silly.

The odds of any number coming up is 1 in 1000, there are 2 drawings a day, and 365 days in the year. So the odds would be. 1 in 182,500. Those really aren't incredible odds.
There is no chance.

Actually, I heard the odds were even lower, almost 1 in a thousand, given the number of people who would play that number...

The number of players wouldn't effect the odds of the game.

The number of days in the year, like the number of players, does not affect the probablility of any particular string of numbers coming up because it's an independent factor, i.e. it doesn't influence the outcome. For any given lotto, the only factors that matter are the number of digit places and the number of numbers possible per place.

Perhaps the Horde Queen can confirm my math:
There were two drawings on 9/11, so we need to add the probabilities of two non-mutually-exclusive events. This is done by adding the probability of the first to the probability of the second, then subtracting the probability of BOTH occurring.
Let
P(A): probability that 911 appears in the first drawing
P(B): probability that 911 appears in the second drawing
P(A and B): probability that 911 appears in BOTH drawings
P(A or B): probability that 911 appears in at least one drawing
P(A or B)=P(A) + P(B) - P(A and B)
=1/1000 + 1/1000 - (1/1000 * 1/1000)
=.001999
So, there was about a 1 in 500.25 chance that 911 would appear in one or both drawings on 9/11. This is slightly more likely than flipping a coin and getting heads 9 consecutive times. Not exactly water into wine.

nick is probably right. Those are the odds of any number coming up on any day.
I was trying to figure the odds of the exact date coming up and I figured you had to account for all the dates to figre that.
