Because cats are inferior beasts only good for eating and place-kicking.

Many cats and dogs are scared of vacuum cleaners. If they were more intelligent they'd probably be scared of vacuums in general, but fortunately for them, they cannot understand the concept.

Some are frightened by the noise, some by the movement and some by the sucking action (and sound) of the vacuum. Remember, to them the vacuum is incomprehensible. It's annalogous to primitive man looking at an eclipse and thinking it's god's manifestation. Here, the cat sees something that makes loud noises, can suck things into it's mysterious interior, and can bump into it. Perhaps they worry they can be sucked into the interior as well.

It's a mutual respect thing. Unbeknownst to us, vacuum cleaners are also terribly frightened of cats.

My dogs always chase around swifers and vacums and bark like crazy. It probably is because of sensitive hearing.

Schrodinger's cat was terrified of boxes with cyanide capsules inside linked to devices that made it exactly a 50% probability that the cyanide would fall and rupture when the door was closed.

The fear was quite normal for a cat even though, until the door was reopened he existed in two quantum states, both alive and dead. It was only when the door was opened and the probability wave collapsed that he could be said to have lived or died in our reality.

Silly cats.
