i dont know, i saw the pic of that monstrousity, tumbling woman, or whatever its called. on one hand i can see wonderboy's point of expressing things that matter to the artist. however, then i see fezzie's point that he could have done a better job! "shock art" has popped up here and there, but do you think it will become a trend someday in the near future?

Wonderboy is a tool when it comes to art

IT was total crap.

It hardly looked like a person. I would have thought it was abstract art if they didn't tell me what it was.

And Wonderboy is a little Art School Fairy.

I haven't seen the art in question, so I can't comment on that directly, but a couple thing to consider -

1. art is an attempt to portray the world; since photography came around and could create realistic portraits and such, art has needed to look for other ways to represent the world around us;

2. when you go to the museum and look at the works from hundreds of years ago, you're seeing the best of the best - with modern art, it's too new to have perspective on what's good. We don't have the standard of realism to go by.

Keep in mind also that modern art is often informed by the cirsumstances of its creation and the philosophy behind it.

It looks like something i flushed this morning.

Art is to the eye of the beholder, but this is in bad taste. I'm somewhat of an artist and i can understand modern art, but I have a feeling this guy did this only to shock and get press and i find that disgusting.

I second PanterA on the sculpture and Moe on Wonderboy. When the graphic designer called in yesterday and Wonderboy called him a `sellout' I couldn't help but laugh. Artists love using that phrase, whether they are musicians, designers, painters or working in some other `medium', because it lets them feel good about being a failure. They get to say that their art is `misunderstood' or that the average person just `isn't capable' of appreciating their art, when the fact is their `art' sucks, and they can't find anyone that thinks otherwise. This is the real world, folks, and what you dolts call a `sellout' is someone that is talented enough to `sell' their work. And what you call `being true to your art' is just your way of saying that you are incapable of making a living at it. <P>

Well, there IS a difference between "business" art and "personal" art...you can put a lot of yourself into graphic design or advertising, but ultimately, usually, it's someone else's design or project. But to call someone a "sellout" for wanting to use their talent for a real job, well, that's just retarded...

Well, now that I've seen it, the sculpture is definitely in bad taste, but I still don't think all modern art should be dismissed.

I agree with PanterA, this tool is just looking for publicity, and as usual the media gave it to him. Art does have its place, but the piece was done in bad taste.

drop the bomb, exterminate them all.

I think the statue is poor, but I don't find it shocking. (Wait! read on!) The statue itself can be anything. It's the name he gave it to be shocking that is in poor taste. Whether or not the WTC actually inspired this, he could have just called it woman falling and now one would have looked twice. Had he just titled it that, and then said at some point he was inspired by the WTC, it wouldn't have been as shocking.
