HK-

I know about a ton of jokes can come up in this thread concerning the subject but I am serious!
What's with oral fixations? I usually feel like I always need something to chew on or suck on...
I even smoke cigarettes when I don't crave one, eat or nibble on food when I am not even hungry. I chew on pens and all that other nonsense...

What's up with that?

I usually feel like I always need something to chew on or suck on... It's a slow hanging curve, it's over the plate.... Mira there are lots of theories on this but the one I thought made the most sense stated that it's related to focusing attention. I think I read it in Driven to Distraction, a book about ADHD. You're doing stuff, you're bored and zoning out, so you bit your nails, chew gum, suck on a jolly rancher etc.

Wow, AG...I was worried about what I was going to see there for a second!

I eat a lot of fruit now. I'll buy watermelon, strawberries or even baby carrots. I even have my tongue pierced but I really try not to fiddle with it even though I do every now and then.

I remember taking a psychology class in college that said that when we're born, we go through certain stages during out adolescence. I think the first was oral and then anal? I forgot the order.

That goes to show you how much I paid attention in college.

for your information... stage
1 of Freud's Psychosexual
Stages of Development...
enjoy

Oral Stage (Age 0 - 1.5)

Erogenous Zone in Focus:
Mouth

Gratifying Activities: Nursing
- eating, as well as mouth
movement, including
sucking, gumming, biting
and swallowing.

Interaction with the
Environment: To the infant,
the mother's breast not only
is the source of food and
drink, but also represents
her love. Because the
child's personality is
controlled by the id and
therefore demands
immediate gratification,
responsive nurturing is key.
Both insufficient and
forceful feeding can result
in fixation in this stage.

Symptoms of Oral Fixation:

* Smoking * Constant
chewing on gum, pens,
pencils, etc. * Nail biting *
Overeating * Drinking *
Sarcasm ("the biting
personality") and verbal
hostility

MIRA - There are 5 stages of Frued's psychosexual development model.

1. Oral
2. Anal
3. Phallic
4. Latent
5. Genital

There are some very interesting and valid points to this model and it can explain a lot of behavior but a lot of it is no longer accepted as "gospel." For example, we know that there is no period of "latency." We also recognize that Frued was very much a product of his society and that society devalued women. His system and theories apply to men, as he considered women to be "other" (not really human).

In any event, during the oral stage, (up to age 1 1/2) the sexual energy is focused on the mouth. The kid doesn't look at it like he or she is getting sexual gratification, to him or her it's just their primary source of pleasure and relief from tension.

It's easy to see how this works. When a kid is hungry mom sticks a breast in his mouth or dad gives him a bottle. When the kid is cranky he is given a pacifier to suck on which calms him or her.

The kid feels hungry, cranky, or like his or her needs aren't being met and the needs are sated via their mouth.

Someone who fixates (or regresses) to this stage desires to have their urges satisfied orally, just like they did when they well kids and received unconditional love, acceptance and all the creature comforts from their mom.

i love the ending with the exlploding lights.

HordeKing, how relevant are Freud's theories today? I'm honestly curious...he seems so rooted in sexual and maternal issues...it all seems too cut and dry.

and the Anal stage is associated with anally fixated people who were put through harsh toilet training programs when they were young. my OCDP buddy never hears the end of that. :)

I, ah...I'm not much of a "word" person...

MOJOPIN - Freud has come under lots of criticism for his gender biased approach to the human psyche. For pete's sake, even the word "hysteria" literally means "wandering womb."

Freud's psychosexual theories have come under a lot of attack for this reason and because he places great empahsis on the penis and sex. He believed that the only two drives were sex and aggression.

Most people who haven't read Frued or studied psychodynamic theory don't have a clue what the Oedipal stage is really all about. (The kid doesn't really want to kill dad and fuck mom - he just wants her undivided love and attention). But that's too big a topic to get into here.

Freud's work is still extremely relevent and still helps many people. His greatest insight (in my opinon) was his dead-on observation that childhood traumas affect adult behavior.

Freud believed that "biology was destiny." Current thinking, as shown in axis 4 of the dsm-IV shows a new awareness of the role of environmental factors in mental illness.

I don't know any practicioner (even psychoanalysts) who rely exclusively on Frued or even neofreudian schools of thought. However, many find that the controlled regression in a therapist's office can succesfully help the person recover from the truama. It works; But it's far from the only tool in the arsenal.
