World Bank/IMF protests here in DC, and I'm going for the umpteenth time...I think I just like gatherings.

Did you go to that Neo-Nazi rally a couple of weeks ago?

I like gatherings, but I hate people. Isn't it ironic?

If there is, it's probably unalcoholic and full of soy. Damn hippies, ruining our good times...

Let me rephrase that: Will there be beer or are you bringing a flask?

Funny you should mention that, I AM bringing my flask...it's one my dad picked up in Russia...it's an "official" KGB flask, with all the markings and logos, inlcuding a little gold impression of Lenin on the cap. And it was undoubtably used...I've poured dozens of liquors in there, and the thing still reeks of industrial strength wodka...

So gimme a stage, where this bull here can rage

maybe since there are a few of you here who feel your time is well spent at one of these rallys you could tell me why you dont like the world bank/imf.

I think a globalization thread would simply be too damn long and boring for the average board user, so I'll just point everyone in the direction of some books that helped clue me in...

"No Logo", by Naomi Klein.
"Culture Jam", by Kalle Lasn.
"Nobrow", by John Seabrook."
"The Battle of Seattle", various authors, published by Soft Skull Press.

Homework is due first thing Monday!

Thanks, Hippie! This is the fourth one I've been to, and the organizers here really have their act together. That's one of the benefits of living here in DC, we've got protest, marches, and citizen groups coming out the ying-yang...I know there's going to be a World Bank/Anti-corporate crime-themed rally on Wall Street in the coming weeks, and Nader's gonna be there...keep your ear to the ground!

In a nutshell, these large protests are a collection people with different concearns, like human rights, the environment, labor rights, or, more generally, economic justice. The World Bank and IMF meetings draw the diverse crowds because they are undemocratic political bodies that play a role in the economies of most of the world's countries and effect the lives of most of the world's people, yet ordinary citizens have no say in them. So these two bodies have become somewhat symbolic of and the the focus of all these other, more specific issues.

Personally, I have mixed feelings about the World Bank and the IMF, (I have seen good and bad come from both), but I'll be there in support of human rights in Indonesia and in opposition to war in Iraq. And to meet hippie chicks.

It's only the hardcore, nutso anarchists (The same ones that turn laregely peaceful protests into the ugly incident syou see on the news) who want to smash and get rid of places like McDonalds. The rest of us, who are a little more levelheaded, just don't want to see these companies influencing politcs and abusing cheap labor forces with unfair wages and working conditions.
