jimmy eat world does suck, and all the media "pop" punk does suck, it will die out eventually.
and punk isnt dead its just been distorted into something its not by the media who call every new band who whines about a girlfriend to an upbeat tempo "punk". there is always gonna be an underground scene keeping punk alive

I really enjoy Jimmy Eat World's CD, but if you listen to the whole thing, they are most definitely NOT punk. I'd consider them "rock" or the term Dan used "indie". Jimmy Eat World have been around for a long fucking time and were a big band in the indie scene in the 90's

When i say punks dead i mean that its not what i was. I havent heard a good local punk band that is like the Sex Pistols or Clash. But ill say DC has a good punk scene (daycare swindlers, shakedowns etc.....) its just not my favorite genre, and doesnt really reflect my definition of punk (Operation Ivy, Minor Threat, Descendants, Clash, Sex Pistols.....etc.)

Sorry if i pissed anyone off.

HEY DC REED. Send me an e-mail we need to discuss this whole DCpunk thing. My band regularly plays with the Swindlers, and The Shakedowns, and we are featured at Veronas alot. personally I cant stand playing there. I am used to playing at "established" clubs with stages/sound system etc. This whole 'DIY' attitude sometimes scares me. ever heard of the "Overpriveledged" from DC. They are probably the 'truest' punk band I know. And yeah Punk is changing. This crap like the "white Stripes" and "vines" is not punk. Personally I prefer good old fashioned rock n roll. I also really dig the "Mooney Suzuki" I think i'll hit them at the 9:30 next time they are around.

The White Stripes and The Vines do not claim to be punk, nor are they called punk. One is blues-based, the other is a garage rock bastardization of Nirvana and "White Album"-Beatles. And nobody else may listen to the Mooney Suzuki. I found them first a couple years back and they are MINE. And they are too sexy and danceable to be punk. That's pure RAWK.

About J.E.W., I'll just say this: every time they're played on the radio, that's at least 3 or 4 minutes of air-time that could be going to a TooL or NIN song.

Hooray! Let's make radio all metal and industrial! No diversity for anyone! Fuck la difference!!!

Actually, I like both Tool and NIN, but if that was all I heard on the air, I'd go nuts and lay under a herd of cattle. After a few years of nu-metal sludge on the radio, it's nice to hear a few bands pull of some decent power pop. Anyone can sample a danceable drum loop, and anyone can bash at their guitars for eight minutes and wail/growl about how the world is full of poopy things and daddy hit them for wanting a Pepsi, but pulling off a decent power pop hook, man, that's a thing of beauty. "Pop" has been twisted in the past few years to cover bubblegum kids acts, but in all actuality, pop simply means the ability to appeal to a massive audience in all demos, age, sex, whatever...and that's tough to do.

'scuse me? Oh, and radio is so diverse now, with every station playing the same five songs, one of which is that f-ing jimmy eat crap song...
There is no metal or industrial on the radio, so don't even try to say that by suggesting Disturbed, NIN, KMFDM, Static-X, Fear Factory, etc, that they're trying to dominate the airwaves, especially while that whining eminem is on every friggin station on the dial...

and anyone can bash at their guitars for eight minutes
again, that song you're so proud of is 2, maybe 3 power chords (2 fingers) with a quick staccatto picking, that argument is asinine...

None of you get it.
If you like the song, listen.
If you dont like the song, dont listen.

SIMPLE AS THAT.

No radio station is going to be able to please all the people all of the time. Thats why cars have tape players and cd players in them.

PS. Disturbed do suck. Their sound is so 'forced' it doesnt sound natural. Its like they are on the toilet pushing and grunting to get the sh!t to drop, while other bands out there, can just sit down, relax, and "let it flow".

IMO, "Tenacious D" is the best album of the year. I never get tired of it. No matter how many times I listen, it's still fucking great. Now that is rare.

That's not what I meant. Metal and industrial, like every other niche genre, has their 4 or 5 token acts played, and that's it. I have no problem with more of either. But some people talk like ALL metal and industrial is the answer. But that would be just like we have now.

again, that song you're so proud of is 2, maybe 3 power chords (2 fingers) with a quick staccatto picking, that argument is asinine...

That was my argument against the nu-metal that's all over the place now. But hey, you wanna support KoRn, Bizkit, Puddle of Mudd, go right ahead...and yes, while you mention it, I'm firmly in the less is more camp. Big riffs and solos leave me cold.

um, no... I think this is the problem, big media has warped people's perception of what "metal" (or rock, or what have you)is. It has been completely perverted....
It's definately not those three "bands"

Pop just bugs me, there are enough frequencies on the radio that people can actually choose what they want to hear, there shouldn't be "music for everyone," but every music station seems to want to play that for ratings, so all we have is this lame, non-threatening crap....

It's definately not those three "bands"

For the THIRD time, these are examples of "NU-METAL" bands. They're not metal, they've been deemed nu-metal, and nu-metal is ASS. It has NOTHING on real metal.

And what we need are actual "mixed" stations, at least on free radio. What we have now is rigidly segmented stations, "alternative", "classic rock", "rap", "country"...adding an exclusively metal station is going to help anything. You get mixed stations (Not that they play EVERYTHING, but they have a lot of bleed-over between similar genres) so people can hear new music, decent bands get a chance to survive, and someone might hear something they didn't expect to like. There's nothing I like more than a song by a band I never thought I'd like or a genre I thought I hated that ends up being my new favorite song. College radio is all I can listen to now, and even that's starting to suck.

You get mixed stations (Not that they play EVERYTHING, but they have a lot of bleed-over between similar genres) so people can hear new music,

But that's exactly what breeds this "nu-metal" you hate so much, these bands who want to fit into these "all things to all people" stations, that's exacly where poppa wretch and Korny, and Limp Wrizted come from, and now all these stupid vines, hives, scabies, are all coming from, too.

Maybe there are some bands you haven't heard that put together a good catchy riff, but because only a station that played exclusively rock would be edgey enough to play them, bands like Clutch, Lost Prophets, Nothingface, Spineshank, Puya, etc.. but because everyone's afraid to say they like something until everyone else says they like it, we get a wonderful "rock" rotation of 2 Red Hot Cilli pepper albums where every song sounds exactly the same how can you actually pick out something that's new and edgy, yet catchy at the same time, when radio only plays "safe" stuff that everyone already says they like...

Music radio is awful and horrible, Even the seton hall station, which was a metal station, just plays rediculous "punk by 12-year olds" and whiny emo, uch..

There's no such thing as "all music to all people" stations. The alternative stations are the closest you get, but they play the same 20 albums, the same 5 nu-metal bands, and the same obviously hip-hop songs that are "OK" because they're done by white guys. And in the end, it's still labelled as an "alternative" station. I'd prefer if it stations HAVE to be desginated with labels, then just give them decades..."99.1, where we play EVERYTHING ever put out musically between 1990 and 2000." I can't stand any one genre of music for more than an hour anyways, so that's why internet radio is such a godsend.

Clutch, Lost Prophets, Nothingface, Spineshank, Puya, etc..

Oh, just so you know, while you were listing some pretty bitchin' bands, the Lostprophets somehow snuck in there. Sorry about that, I'll be sure to check the traps next time...

Wait, maybe I'm confused...I'm hoping that's NOT the Welsh rap-punk group...so if they're not, my mistake...and thank the Lord.

um, I've only heard a few songs by them, but I like what I've heard, they don't really sound like rap or punk, not to me anyway. if I hear more of them, and it turns out to be rap-punk, I stand corrected...

and the same obviously hip-hop songs that are "OK" because they're done by white guys.
That always bugged me, you won't hear a station that plays rap or R&B play stuff like Sevendust, Orange 9mm or Canderia because they have black singers, why would rock stations play rap by white guys?

This thread gives me a headache.

I listen to indie rock and 90's metal. fuck nu-metal. fuck these "metal" bands that are "GOD BANDS" IN DISGUISE! WTF IS UP WITH THAT?

jimmy eat world is actually a very talented band - you just have to listen to more of their stuff. they really pull it together well.

That always bugged me

It drives me insane. The weak alterna-station here has no problem playing Beastie Boys, Eminem, Cypress Hill and House of Pain, yet they tool on hip-hop every chance they get...idiots...
