For the record, the term "Bannana Republic" is a fairly recent term. Bannanas are not indiginous to the US. Once we got a taste for them, however, our appettite for the potassium rich fruit became insatiable.

The US government eventually propped up puppet govenrments in some countries that produced lots of bannanas in order to ensure that the bannanas continued to be exported to our fair shores.
