My cat is 18, she has kidney trouble....she's now skin and bones. But she'll still eat chicken breast I cook for her. She seems to get more listless week by week, but not in any pain. When do I decide enough is enough? Cause I don't want to end her life before I have to, but I don't want her to suffer...She's not in pain...but she's not happy...When is the right time?

well, its not an easy thing to do. If the animal suffering then I say its time to have it put down, even though its one of the most horrible things to do. It reminds me of my old cat, Samantha, she died of kitty breast cancer. She didn't seem like she was suffering, but then one day i go to take my morning shower and there she was, dead. . .
Losing a pet is a hard thing, but if the pet is living a life of constant pain and suffering, its only for the best to have the pet taken care off. So honestly, I say give it a couple more weeks, see how the pet is doing, and if it looks like they're suffering, you have to do what you have to do.

she's not in pain, I don't think...but she's not eating much now....I don't want to let her go but I don't want her to suffer because I'm selfish.

i've been forced to put a few of my pets down over the years. Putting my german shepard to sleep was the hardest thing i've ever had to do.
But I waited until they were in pain. advanced age was not enough for me to do it.

she's 18....and younger than my other cat...but she's no longer eating....I was cooking chicken breasts for her, was the only food she'd eat...now she's not touching it. She's just bones. I don't know if I can wait until she's in pain. She seems uncomfortable but not in pain. Her not eating really has pushed me to thinking that it might be time. I so don't want to do this!

Have you taken her to the vet?

Took her to the vet 3 months ago...after $123 worth of tests discovered her kidneys are failing. Was basically told it was only a matter of time. I don't want it to be time! 18 years of being with her...indoor cat, shoot I just lost my mom in May I don't want to lose anyone else....not that a cat compares...but geez! she's my baby!

I'm so sorry Pam. I've had many pets die. I had a cat die of uremia. She went very fast.
If she's not in any pain I don't see why you have to put her down. She may just go quietly in her sleep. Cherish the time you still have with her.

Thanks all. Today, I took her to a farm in Vermont. The vet agreed...she'll terrorize the chickens and have a blast.

Sorry to hear it Pam, hope you're alright. Sometimes it's for the best to let them go. Hang in there, I know how hard this is.

Its hard to put down a loved pet of the family, but if it`s suffering you got to do what you got to do.
Its pretty cold in here.......

PAM - Euthenising a beloved pet is a terrible emotional trauma. There is little you can do to make it easier, but with time, it will grow easier to bear.
Holding my Shepard/Lab mix as he died (2 seconds after the shot) was one of the most profound experiences of my life.
Regarding the decision of when to do it, I suggest you follow 2 guidelines. First your vet is the expert here and if he or she tells you that your pet is in pain or can no longer enjoy any quality of life, it's time to take the plunge and do the ultimate kindness for your pet. Second, you know your pet. You know the weight she's lost, the activities she can no longer do and whether you want to keep her alive for yourself or for her.
As hard as it is to do, it's really the biggest favor you can do to a suffering pet. It's odd that our society has no trouble of allieviating the unbearable suffering of our pets, but will not permit the same kindness to fellow humans.

I can only believe I made the right decision....I hope it wasn't selfish, but what was right for her....18 years is a lot of memories...to some it was a cat...to me....it was my friend and my baby...I'll miss her very much

Pam, you did a good thing.
Your cat lived with dignity, I'm sure. It's only logical to let her die that way, too.

Damn right HK.
And Pam -- I'm sorry about your cat. I used to date a vet and she told me it's a very gentle procedure for the pet. We had to do the same thing for our dog who had a spinal injury. As tough as it was to let go of him, it would have been worse to watch him suffer.
