My best friend of 22 years, known him since 1st grade, made a pact last time we talked.
His gandmother had a stroke and was in a digenerative state were there was no hope of recovery. He then actually turned off the machine after consulting with the family.
We made a promise to each other. That if one of us was very sick, and if we were going to be living off a machine, that who ever was not dying would turn off the machine. I tell you it was hard to talk about, but he said that he did not want his family to have to physicaly do it. He had to for grandma and he said it was a mind f. He also said he could only trust me to do it. We agreed on the basis that he would do the same for me.
Could you do that? Could you if you knew 100% without a doubt that your friend wanted you to be the one to actually TURN THE MACHINE OFF?

Yes. It's better than living on a machine while brain dead, and draining someone else's life savings. That's more awful than pulling the plug, although that's got to be excruciatingly painful.

I tell you.. When my buddy talks about it.. he get this look on his face that is soooo empty. It's like he is gone. Like a zombie. He knows he had to do it cause his mom could never have done it. It is very weird to see him talk about it cause it's like someone I don't know... quiet.. low voice.. and heart breaking. <P>

I would want that too, and while although I agree with your pact, he better inform his family of this...if he is married and has kids and stuff and you want to pull the plug on him, they might not let or want you to. All I'm saying is let his wish be known to his loved ones.

We had to do just that thing with my mother about 20 years ago. After three years of leukemia it was her time. She was losing her dignity lying there on all those stupid fucking machines. I would do the same thing again. Not an easy thing to do but you just know when enough is enough.

I could never make a pact like that with a friend. for legal reasons.
In other words I agree with Aggie.
Besides, I rather have my family do it.
So I can say my last words to their faces.

I think it's a lot easier said than done. I agree that you're not really "living" when you're on a life-sustaining machine, you're merely existing. I would hope someone would pull the plug on me and I'd like to think I'd be able to do the same for someone I cared about, too.
My grandmother is in the advanced stages of Alzheimer's right now, and it's so difficult to see her like this. She just stares into space and has to be force fed. It may sound awful, but I honestly wish she would pass soon. It's absolute torture on my grandfather and mother to see her like this, and she has no consciousness about her whatsoever.

About a month before my dad died, a hospital administrator came into his room while I was visiting (mind you, I was a terrified 20 year old who didn't want to lose her only parent) and asked him if he wanted to be resusitated should things "happen." My dad was miserable and in pain and wasting away. He didn't want to go on, but he still said that he did want to be resusitated because I was there.
I followed the administrator when she left the room and confronted her. I told her that perhaps it would be smarter to ask that question while the patient didn't have a visitor. I also suggested she visit him again, when he's had time to think about it more thoroughly.
Sometimes hospital people can be SO stupid!!! (And, yes, he did change his mind.)

man.. sorry. I grew up
around hospitals.. My dad
is a doctor in AZ a heart
surgan.. I have seen him
work. It is not easy.. but I
have also seen and meet
some doctors who think
and feel like they are god.
They are the WORST. they
lose sight of the humanity
of a person they are
working on and think only of
the bill or track record they
may keep. I could never be
a doctor. I have seen my
dad give both good and bad
news to family members...
too much for me.
