Do cranberry supplements or juice help prevent UTIs? [Archive]

Do they really work as a preventative measure? I know once you get one the only thing that will cure it are antibiotics.

ALICE FUZZYBUTT - I think most people have heard this at one point or another so I decided to do some research on it.

Studies have confirmed the common belief that recurrences of urinary tract infections can be prevented with cranberry juice.

It works because of compounds in cranberries called condensed tannins, or proanthocyanidins, can stop E. coli from attaching to the urinary tract, making it easier for the body to flush bacteria from the bladder and urinary tract during urination. Alternatively, cranberry juice prevents urinary tract infections by promoting the growth of good bacteria and eliminating the E coli bacteria.

Other studies have shown that cranberry juice might actually PREVENT or CURE urinary tract infections, but more studies are needed in this regard.

Alice F: Horde King pretty much was right in his description. I think, though, that the "supplements" of cranberry haven't been studied like the juice itself, and may not work like the juice does.

My kidney problems result from me getting too many UTI's that were left untreated. My doctor said the juice does help, becuase it affects the acidity of your urine, but I don't know about the supplements.

You might consider trying cranberry juice concentrate. As little as 2 oz a day is effective.

However, juice is certainly easier to find.

Cranberry juice (I never tried supplements) always helped me get rid of UTIs faster. My doctor told me to continue drinking it to help prevent future recurrences. He said it was due to the acidity. Even a glass (6 oz or so) a day helps.

Keep in mind that cranberry juice - at least the ordinary variety like Ocean Spray - is full of sugar & water, with only some of the real juice. The high sugar content may actually encourage the growth of bacteria & yeast.

You're better off drinking unsweetened cranberry juice concentrate, which you can buy in any health food store, or buy the cranberry supplements.

See, the problem is that God gives men a brain and a penis, and only enough blood to run one at a time.

If you do the supplements, be prepared. Tried those once, they worked, but the color of my urine was scarey! The directions did say that would happen...but floresent orange?

I remember sitting in the ER at Chilton Hospital near me once, and hearing the conversation a doctor was having with the patient behind a curtian.

He said "I'm going to put yo on this medication, but it's going to turn your urine BRIGHT ORAGNE."

And the say he said it, I started looking around for hidden cameras, cause I thought I was on Candid Camera or one of it's knock offs.

But when no one ever came to have me sign a waiver, I got the idea that this guy's piss was going to be bright FLorida Orange.

i was rushed to the hospital for an uti and a hemmoraging bladder. the doctor told me that in order for the uice to really work youd have to drink like 6 gallons a day. but she did say to try the supplements. and im on the bright orange pee meds but its better that the maroon color my urine was all morning.. yuch
