Some people suggest that
it's due to the cold causing
all the bloodvessels in your
mouth (there are tons, and
close to the durface, think
how easy it is to make your
gums bleed by brushing too
hard) constricting, and the
reduced blood flow
triggering pain receptors.

Last i heard nobody knows
for certain though.

Of course I imagine you
could look this up on the
internet, too.

TooCute is right. For a split second, you're cutting off oxygen to the brain...causing pain.

i got my heart but my heart's no good
you're the only one that's understood...you are the perfect drug.

TOO CUTE is absolutely correct that the exact reason isn't known.

It is believed to have to do with the rapid constriction of the blood vessles in the mouth and throat. Others place the blame on the pain receptors in the sinuses.

Both theories make sense, but the latter has a special attraction to me. Not everyone gets "brain freeze." Offhand, my recollection is that only about 25% of the population is suseptable. I wonder how well that correlates with the percentage of the population that has other sinus problems...
