View Full Version : "Night People" and Depression
I have always wondered this because a lot of people that I know who are "night people", i.e., people who function better at night and have more energy then, tend to have more problems with depression. Is there any validity to this, Horde King?
I have always been a night person myself and I don't think that there is a way to "reset" someone's rhythm as I have tried and had to get up very early for certain jobs, and just felt crabby when I had to do it. Last night I was exercising and cleaning at around 11:30 p.m.

Doesn't that tie in with the people who get depressed during the winter because there's less daylight?

COCO - As many people on the board know (:)) I'm a night person myself. I rarely get to sleep before 4:00 AM.
It is true that there is a correlation between depression and sleep disturbances But correlation is not the same as causation. Just becasue they're linked doesn't mean that one caused the other. For example, snow and winter are linked, but neither causes the other.)
Suggesting that being a night person causes depression is a good theory as many people who are awake all night are depressed. However, studies have shown that the causation and temporal priority in this is that depression creates the "night person," not the other way around.
(Of course, there are plenty of night people who are not depressed.)
There is something called seasonal depression but it is a separate topic not related to being a night person.

I was taught they are kinda related. Not to challenge HK (gasp! ;)) but colors, light, temperature, have been linked to depression. I'm not saying they will CAUSE depression in a person who has no predisposition, but they can be either a trigger or an enhancer to a pre-existing condition. I learned that classrooms, places of business, etc. will always be painted in light, pastel colors... "happy" colors, with the intention of promoting peace, well-being and a pleasant state of mind. You're never going to find a classroom painted black. Darkness (whether consciously or not) signifies aloneness, bleakness, loss of sight (which in turn means loss of control). Sounds pretty depressing to me.

I had to become a night person because of my job. I work untill 10 or 11pm. So I had to change my whole system by waking up later and staying up later. It sucks, but I have to do it right now until the MTA lets me have more normal hours (hopefully AM) without killing myself at work.

LISA - Please challenge! I'm certainly not infallible.
I was referring above to the common misconception that a link is the same thing as a cause. It's remarkable how many people make the mistake.

ok let me throw in my unofficial theory.
lol
since i work all night I am very depressed, the reason i think it is is cause i cant sleep, I dont see people around me I feel lonely and with all the time i have at night i think of to many problems and shit in my head, so thusly that is why night people are depressed
lol
....now excuse me i need to go look outside my window here and look at the moon and cry

SEXY - Consider this. Your theory is that you are depressed because you have to work nights. From this you extrapolate that people who are up at night tend to be depressed.
The flip side to this is that your depression attracted you to that type of work. From that it can be extrapolated that depressed people are drawn to activities that keep them awake at night.
That's what's meant by "temporal priority" It isn't clear on it's face which event resulted in what consequence (and for the moment we'll assume causation). Temporal priority must always be proven in order for a study to be valid.

Wow that sucked, preview post lliieeed.

--------

Studies show that a certain (small, like 5) percentage of humans naturally acclimate to a longer 'day' than most people do (I think it was about 30+ hour days, rather than 24 hour days), I know cuz I read it in Discover!

These people have trouble sleeping and following 'standard' schedules. Personally I don't think it's a coincidence these people generally tend to be vaguely on the outskirts of society.

So there it is, if you naturally have trouble doing what everyone else does more easily, life is harder. School is hard, work is hard, going to bed when you don't wanna every goddamn night is hard. Not to mention not sleeping well every day of your life isn't good for brain chemical balance. Hence, depression.

At least that's my lil' opinion - or at least I think a big contributor.

All I can say is that once I was in a self-help type of meeting. It seemed a predominate portion of the people there woke up very late and were up at all hours of the morning and most suffered from depression. It was so funny because one guy and lady in the group used to call each other every night at around 2:30 a.m.
I just tend to think, Horde King, that there is also a physical type of thing involved here. Maybe something along the lines that it takes our bodies longer to "get into gear". Similar to someone who has low blood pressure (which I have) and low blood sugar (which I have). Since both of these are lowest in the morning, these type of people are basically "rigor mortis" until around 12:00 noon. I look at our brains as being an organ too. Perhaps there is something chemical in the brain that might involve waking up later, having energy at night and depression.
Like I said, I don't think I will ever be a morning person. I have tried, but was crabby until around noon and had more energy at night. I don't necessarily suffer from depression, but can understand a physical cause to the way people react.

I know Im still young and havn't experienced everything yet so therefore bare with me. I wouldn't say I'm depressed but I do tend to think of things long hard and deep and realize all of my mistakes and defaults. Fortunatly that doesn't keep me awake at late hours. WJFK keeps me awake until 3am every morning causing me to get about 4 hours of sleep a night during the school week.
Would not getting enough sleep contribute to anything depression related?

I myself am also a nigh person. I find it very difficult to go to sleep early like most people. I think that people mistake depression and being tired. In school it may seem like i'm depressed but its just i'm dead tired. Mopping around is normally a sigh for depression but it also reflects lack in sleep.
