View Full Version : WHERE are these radio ratings taken from? ASK ME about R&F DAMMIT!

Does anyone know how the ratings for radio are taken? I'd REALLY like to know, cause no one EVER asked me what I listen to.
Do they just ask old people? DO they have some sort of inside the industry poll? Or are they supposed to stop people on the street and ask them? Is it a mailing poll? Are some of those people that phone me that I hang up on pollsters?
PLEASE tell me if I can go somewhere and vote for Ron and Fez, cause they're tops in my book.

Its a good question. The question was posted a lonnng ass time ago, but i never checked to see the answer, and have never been able to find the post again. Sometimes I wonder if i turn on an additional radio in my house during the show, if I'm helping the ratings. I'll hang up now and listen to the answer.

Im quite curipus about that as well. I always thought that theyre were about 1000-2000 selected listneres and they give them special radios that they cant tell what they are listening to. Im probably wrong.

They send a a pamphlet and you fill it in with your listening schedule. I have done it twice so far. You are put on Arbitron's mailing list. I am not sure how they got my name but I have filled out the form twice.
We want Ron and Fez live in DC.

My Media teacher told me
last year that it's done
through phone call polls as
well as Neilson boxes (just
like TV). Certain families
get selected and/or
volunteer to have a radio
neilson box in their homes.
I think I can trust the guy,
cuz he has worked for
Howard Stern and WFAN.

... I was an Arbitron listner a few monthes ago... they called my house up, and asked if we would be willing to take part in the Arbitron survey, so I said yes. They sent me four pamphelts for each of the members of my household over 18, and we were to monitor how we listened to the radio for the reporting week. I filled out my survey, and then filled out the other 3 surveys, said O and A and R and F for the whole week, then sent em in. They also give you 3 dollars in each pamphlet for taking part in the survey, so I became 12 dollars richer... anyway, that's my own insight into the Arbitron ratings...

They also give you 3 dollars in each pamphlet I only got $1. Bastards!

And why the hell can't the public see them? Arbitron charges the radio companies a sh**load of $ to see them & puts severe restrictions on what info can be passed along. If you release too much to the public they'll cut you off.

When the last ratings said Ron & Fez got a 2.7 rating, I posted on the dentist's message board asking someone to translate that into the number of listeners. How many listeners do you think it was? (I'll post the answer later)

Arbitron do indeed charge a
good deal of money for the
service.
My wife works for a marketing
company and as the radio buyer
uses the data provided by
Arbitron to attempt to ascertain
what sort of person listens and
when. She can then buy
advertising "spots" at the most
popular times on the most
popular stations with the target
"demographic" listener she
requires.
I feel so used :) when listening to
radio.
Her company pays something
like $25,000 per year and they
have no choice but to use
Arbitron as no one else does
what they do. Ergo they can
charge what the want.
They are to radio what Donovan
is to Advertising.

Dean is right, the station company's make up the money they pay for Arbitron reports in Advertising commercials and spots. Officialy, Ron And Fez are doing good in the ratings. during the summer they were the #1 show in NY AM and FM in their time slot, I believe they got into the low 3.x ratings which is good. The reason WNEW has 1.7 in ratings because in the summer O&A and R&F were the only shows getting good ratings, out of 4 or 5 time slots, and DON & MIKE SUCK and there not funny, and I wanted to say that cause I hate them and their stupid fake laughing garbage :D

I participated in an Arbitron survey about 5-6 years ago. I only got $1, but it was nice and crisp.
I want my other $2!
