Of course it doesn't look like a "movie-movie", it's a documentary. Ever hear of "Roger & Me" and "The Big One"? Those are other documentaries made the same guy, Michael Moore....

Well, it'll probably just come and go. It'll have a little more press because of the whole sniper thing. But know this...Moore is about as liberal as you can get. "Roger & Me" and "The Big One" are pretty just anti-big business pieces, so they're universal..."Roger" deals with how GM closed it's major factories in his hometown of Flint, Michigan to move overseas, and ended up basically shutting the town down. But "Columbine" is his gigantic anti-gun piece. It's funny at times, but it's a bit grating after a while. By the time he's almost pouncing a dottering, senile Charlton Heston, it was just getting too easy.

i saw the premier of bowling for columbine in pleasentville, it was EXCELLENT. i may be biased because i'm a huge michael moore fan, but it was amazingly good. he basically searches for the asnwer to why there's 11,000 more gun deaths in america than in any other country, and no it's not just a bunch of anti-gun liberal crap, it's really honest stuff. a great movie. everyone should see it.

Whew, glad I got that outta my system. I've actually heard pretty good things about this flick. It's a documentary about guns in America, or more importantly why there is so much gun violence here as opposed to other countries wear kids have even easier access to them (Canada is used as a point of reference). And it's supposedly ends with a rather disturbing scene where in Moore is pretty much beating up on a mentally impaired Charlston Heston.

I think Michael Moore is often over rated, but might actually look to catch this one.

I cannot wait to see this. "Roger and Me" actually changed the way that I look at life around me and big-business in general. The movie opened this past weekend in NY and LA and soon nationwide depending on how the premieres went. "The Big One" was an excellent movie as well. The way he does his films and TV show (The Awful Truth) is just unique and the stars are pretty much the citizens of this country itself. Just some heartbreaking pieces in there about how greedy our nation has become and how in some cases corporations are put first before "We The People". I highly recommend checking out anything you can get your hands on of his. Really good thought provoking stuff.

If you're a Moore fan, you'll love the film. And I am one myself, but this came across a lot like his last book "Stupid White Men"...he makes good points, but the sly humor seems to vanish for far too long, and his tone ends ends being far too bitter and malicious. Still better than 95% of whatever else is in theaters...

Granted I am a huge mark for Michael Moore and his books/films this film is really really good. I laughed, cried, got some chills and was just overcome with emotion (good and bad) at many parts of the movie. My little blurb here will not do the film justice. There is some fucked up shit going on and blew my mind. Check this out.

Liberals don't hate America. We love it so much, we want to change it for the better...for us. Because we're the best and we deserve it. Anyone who complains about it is just bitter because they're too useless and lazy to try and and fix anything, so they just wallow and cry. So sad, so sorry, it's our country now. I'd say change the channel, but we've taken control of the media. Just sit tight, and we'll be along shortly.

That's blatantly false. He DOES believe that if the Democrats can be demonized for things like affairs, he feels the Republicans should suffer the same since many of them are "guilty" of the same stupid, unimportant misbehaving. But every chance he has, he blasts and demonizes the Democrats for betraying liberal ideals, for catering to the middle, for buddying up to the Republicans. This man hates the Democrats more than most over-60 Republicans.

And until recently, the majority of his works have been against big business, the screwing over of the common American blue-collar worker, and the loss of American jobs to cheap foreign labor overseas. And if you can't support THOSE ideals, well, then your monocle is on a little too tight.

And so he hates guns...so what? Big deal, gun lovers can run around loving them, gun haters can run around hating them. There's no one way people have to feel about these things. Him projecting his own opinion through his own public project and the fact it can be seen by whoever wants to see it is so goddamn American it hurts.

I haven't seen Bowling for Columbine yet, so I can't comment on this for anything recent, but why would you think this about Roger & Me? I think he made some valid points on the devastating effects of closing a major auto plant and relocating it to Mexico. Flint, Michigan practically died economically and socially as a result. Are you saying it's completely ok to move jobs elsewhere, even if it harms our own citizens by taking away their livelyhood? Sure, from a business standpoint it makes sense, but it's torturous to provide opportunities to hundreds of families, and then take it away after they have become dependent. There is a certain amount of social responsibility that comes with running a major business, that should take equal precedence with bottom line considerations.

I don't have a problem with your opinions, but please back them up with examples. All you're doing is spouting a lot of nonsense without proving your point. If you feel so strongly about it and want others to see your side, give us something to go on besides emotion.

You sound like you've watched too many episodes of Rush Limbaugh to have a clear idea of the whole picture. And let me set the record straight right now - I am not partial to any particular political party. I only care about the issues at hand, and not lobbies on either side. Please don't consider my defense of Michael Moore as another diatribe from a "bleeding heart liberal." Thanks.

I haven't watched the movie, so I won't comment, but I do want to get into the liberal debate here. "Liberals love this country so much they want to change it for the better?" Please.

If your idea of changing the country for the better is intending to blame America for everything bad that happens to us while giving every other culture a free ride, then you're pretty dumb. Are we to blame for some stuff, yes,we're not pefect. However, we are better than most all in all, and we shouldn't be afraid to be called "arrogant" for saying that.

Fact is if you are a true liberal and believe in liberal doctrine, you are an idealist. You believe we are in a world of utopia where every other culture is as peace-loving and good to the core as us. Fact is they are not. If they WERE, I WOULD be a liberal. But, they're not. There is evil out there who want everyone to be enslaved like they are in many of the Islamic countries around the world today. If we are to follow liberal doctrine, we would do nothing to them and just allow ourselves to be destroyed by them. You want to see what liberlism does to a country? See France in World War II. They allowed themselves to be annihilated by the Germans. Look what happened? Do you want America to turn into that? Without even knowing it, you do if you are a liberal. You see, when evil is around, you can't be the ultimate good guy and do nothing. That makes you a coward, not a good guy. And that is why if we do what liberals want, this country will burn at the hands of evil if not now, eventually. The liberal movement has rendered us a weaker nation than the one that freed the world of Nazism and facism in the 40s.

You see , the evil of today, they teach their kids to kill us, we teach them to tolerate everyone. Who would kill who in a fight when THEY start it?

Now, I would go on to trash the idiocy of defending Michael Moore cuz he's just fighting a media that lets Republicans get away with everything, but I'm too busy laughing at the comment to respond. Go read the NY Times and watch all the news channels not named Fox, genius.

I haven't watched the movie, so I won't comment, but I do want to get into the liberal debate here. "Liberals love this country so much they want to change it for the better?" Please.

I started to read this, but then trailed off when I realized it was just yet another person from the other side of the fence trying to tell me what I think. Funny, I didn't know I had a little man who lives in my head who knows all and sees all. I guess I'll have to get it checked out.

Listen up, Sherlock. I love America. I spent half of my life growing up overseas, so I can actually say without a doubt that this is the greatest country on Earth, I'm eternally grateful I was born and can live here, and that's not ever going to change. BUT, being complacent and not even bothering to try to change things for myself or people around me who think likemindedly is about the biggest insult I can think of to the ideals that supposedly define this country. That kind of change isn't some kind of facist, "everyone must obey" doctorine, it's simply making other OPTIONS possible. I don't subscribe to the "all or nothing" horseshit that most liberals or conservatives seem to buy into on most major social and politcal issues. I agree with Moore's stance on big business, but I look at guns a different way. I see no problem with people owning as many registered handguns, shotguns or hunting rifles as they want. I simply oppose the average joe being able to have a machine gun in his grubby hands within days of deciding he might want to do some "big" shooting.

As much as you want to, you couldn't guess my politcal or social views on most of the major issues of the day. People on both sides of the politcal divide need to stop thinking they and the other side think in these cookie cutter, black-and-white terms of what's right or wrong. Your post makes it sound as if that since other cultures "teach their children to kill", we should do the same. I'm all for with being honest about America's foreign policies and what happened with events like 9/11 with our children. The world is harsh and violent and can be very ugly. They need to understand this, but they don't need to be made to taught to hate or want to kill other people. How are we any better than the terrorists then? Part of what makes us better is that we don't have to stoop to those pathetic levels. Growing up outside of the country, I was luckily exposed to a multi-cultural view of not just America, but the world, and I got to see an honest, well-rounded view of what our country can do and has done, the good, the bad, the excellent, and the not-so-great. Like I said, we're the greatest country in the world, and we should be leading by example. We're nowhere near being a "utopia", and I doubt that could EVER happen, but it doesn't me can't strive to be the best we can possibly be.

Why "settle" for less just so we can squabble with the other countries out there that just wish they could be us? I'm not "violent" or "non-violent". I fully support an aggressive war on terror, but feel an invasion of Iraq is misguided and foolish. What about North Korea? What about Saudi Arabia? Why not make sure bin Laden is dead or captured? Why are we sidetracking from the proven and known threats to someone who "might" be a threat to us down the line?

A lot of things are good in this country, and I want to help make them great. Now quit peeing on my parade and sit down. I've got work to do, and damned if you can stop me, even if you wanted to.

I've got an NRA story:

A couple years ago when I worked at the Federation of American Scientists' Arms Sales Monitoring Project I attended a conference on the global arms trade organized by Anne Markusen of the Council on Foreign Relations and Rutgers University. The panelists included senior officials of the State Dept. and the Defense Dept., who debated each other on the question of liberalizing the liberalizing of US arms trade, (removing the barriers to US companies selling weapons to foreign countries. The current barriers include: no weapons to non-NATO nuclear powers, US weapons for legitimate self-defense only, no weapons or training for gross violators of human rights, and US weapons cannot be transferred to a third country without US authorization - ie. Israel's attempt to transfer US-made AWACS planes to China a couple years ago). There were panelists who were experts on transfer of weapons to regions of conflict, the global black market in weapons, the future of the US defense industry, etc. Ms. Markusen also invited the NRA to participate.

When the NRA representative gave his statement, the crowd was bewildered. His position was simply that these liberal groups wanted to take all guns from legal gun-owning Americans. He was asked if he understood what the topic of the conference was - the global arms trade? He said it was part of the conspiracy to take all the guns away - that the NRA had members in countries around the world and they had a right to keep guns for sport shooting and hunting. When asked how that fit in with the topics of the conference - the supply of weapons to the Taliban in Afghanistan, the conflicts in the Congo, Bosnia, the Phillipines, Colombia, the regimes of the Middle East, etc. he simply restated his case for the rights of sport-shooters and hunters. He was essentially laughed off the stage.

He had no more complicated understanding of issues beyond the "slipery-slope" theory of "they want to take all our guns away," even when the conference had nothing to do with American gun ownership.

This is what the NRA contributes to American politics - they have a very simplistic platform, which is to state over and over that "they" want to take all guns from all Americans. It will not acknowledge that there is any grey area to their issue. There is no one who wants to keep legal gun ownership while making it harder for freaks like Dillon and Klebold, the serial sniper and the others who contribute to the 11,000 gun murders from getting guns. For the NRA there is only "us" and "them." They also repeat hypotheticals about masses of people who want to break into your house and rape your wife, etc. etc.

As for Bowling for Columbine, I don't think that Moore was blaming guns for the gun violence. There was a substantial portion of the movie devoted to making the point that Canada has about the same proportion of guns as we do, but only a tiny fraction of the gun violence. He blames the culture of fear in America most of all - and blames the television news media more than the NRA. I think this is a good argument, but I was surprised that he didn't interview Walter Cronkite or one of the many other former and current news officials who have stated for decades now that the sensationalism in TV news is driven by the increasing profit motive of the networks. "If it bleeds it leads" was stated a few times, but the case could have been made better.

Most of the criticism for the movie that I've seen has addressed Moore's interview with Charlton Heston at the end. I had heard many times that he was "practically pounding on Heston", who seemed to be so debilitated that he barely seemed to know what was going on. Having seen the movie now I disagree completely. Heston was obviously just as coherent when he was making the speeches at Columbine and Michigan. He stated the same pat arguments that the NRA has used for decades. The only difference is that suddenly he was being asked to explain his views. I've never seen anyone from the NRA who could have done any better than Heston. They just

exactly! thank you, that was perfect.

I think it's sentiment like this that most fuels the insane "liberals hate America" idea. I don't care how much you love this country, the numbers are there in plain old black and white: Americans go nuts when they get guns. Not all gunowners, sure, but come on, look at the number of annual gun deaths compared to ANY other western country in the world. It just doesn't make any sense.

The "liberals hate America" idea is fueled by intelectual cowards who don't have the courage to test their own ideas for facts. Instead they level the most extreme slander they can think of against their opponents then refuse to back it up with facts.

Moore made the point with the Canada gun statistics - they are almost as armed as we are but they don't kill each other like we do. What would you say is the difference?

What would you say is the difference?

And then people will point to "violence in the media" before actually blaming guns or ourselves, yet ignore the fact that two of the most violent countries of the 20th century, Germany and Japan, have television and films that put our goriest to shame, and yet have gun violence rates smaller than most of our individual STATES.
