View Full Version : Moving... any advice?

Hey folks.
I'm moving cross-country soon, and I was looking for some advice. Here's my situation:
I currently drive a pickup truck. I THOUGHT the best idea would be to rent a trailer from U-Haul, load up everything in the cab and the trailer, and drive.
Unfortunately, the cost of the trailer is upwards of 600 bucks once you figure in the hitch and insurance.
My next plan: Getting a fiberglass cap for the truck bed, loading everything into under that (that I can hold) and drive.
It's about the same cost as the trailer, but at least I'll have something to show for it once I'm done... and I can re-sell it.
Another idea is just loading up everything essential in the truck (TV, PS2, computer, microwave, essentially, all the expensive electronics) and then buying furniture from Target once I arrive.
Any advice would be HIGHLY appreciated.

I rented a U-Haul trailer and pulled it behind my pickup from California to Chicago a few years ago and it cost me less than $250. I think the rates depend on the amount of available vehicles going from one area to another, and you may be able to save some serious money by renting the trailer in Jersey or some other area.
Also, one thing I noticed, (here in the DC area anyway), is that thrift shops in Northern California are alot cheaper than here. I've always dragged the essentials with me and bought the ugliest furniture possible at thrift shops when I got there. I found the greatest green and yellow couch in Chicago for $15. If you're going to the SF Bay Area let me know, I lived there for 15 years. And as for the trip itself, take the most scenic route, even if it's longer. I think I took Route 5 and it was like staring at a still picture of dry grass for days at a time. Sucked.

I moved from florida to NY in '98. I just packed the essentials and put the rest in storage.
I still haven't gone back for that stuff.

Dude, check the internet. You can probably buy a used cap for your truck for about 350. Try suburban caps in jersey they carry a shitload.
I wish I had a Kryptonite cross, because then I could keep both Dracula and Superman away.

Don't bring your furniture. If
you don't have to worry
about a trailer your life will
be much easier in rest
areas, overnight, etc. You
won't have to worry as much
about your stuff getting
stolen.
I have driven across the
coutry twice (there and
back), one time to move.
don't underestimate how
much easier your life will be
if you ship your stuff
beforehand. Especially if
you don't know where you're
going to be living. Find a
friend, mail it to them, and
pick your stuff up when you
have a permanent place. It
took me 2 months to find
one in Palo Alto. It is
certainly not cheaper than
living out here!
Screw whoever said take a
scenic route. There IS NO
scenic route across the
middle of the coutry! All
those plains states suck,
no matter what. Just get on
80 an drive. Don't stop in
Nebraska if you can help it.
You can make it in 3 days if
you drive hard and use
caffeine, or easily in 5.
Chicago and St Louis are
both one day drives from
Manhattan.
Definitely buy furniture. If
you're going to a town with a
university, you can always
get stuff cheap. Graduate
students are always getting
their degrees and moving
away. Just look on their
bulletein boards.

Advice re moving: Leave all your stuff except pictures and the like and buy new things. It's expensive but so much less a headache.
