Digging to China

Ok let's say I dug a hole to China (or australia, I'm not sure what is on the exact opposite side of the globe, but it's irrelevant). Then I jump in head first (disregard my personal health for a minute).

So do I come rocketing out of the hole in China head first, defying gravity? My guess is I would get to the middle of the Earth and just stop.

if there were no air, you'd accelerate on the way down, and then decelerate on the way back up on the other side, so you'd come to a stop just as you popped out of the hole on the other side. Once you take air friction into account, you wouldnt make it all the way back out the other side, then fall back down, then come back up the original hole part way, then fall back over and over until you came to rest at the core. Then the Mole Men would shoot you with their ray and eat you.

No... Gravity is strongest at the center, which is why the earth is held together. So if you became part of the center, you aint going nowhere.

okie.. so then my new guess is, I would jump in the hole, and fall pretty damn fast. But as gravity weakened toward the center, I would slow down, and eventually stop as I reached the center (0 gravity) and stay there.

I still think that your aceleration at the beginning would be enough that you'd fly past the center, then go part way up the other side, then fall back, back and forth a couple of times.

more clarification - lessening of the gravity would not slow you down (intertia would keep you at least going at the same speed) but the air resistance would work against you eventually slowing you down - the initial acceleration should leave you with enough speed to not be stopped in the dead center by the resistance the first time down, but after a couple of oscillations
