I know there's quite a few axmen here on the board, and I was just wondering what type of gear set up you guys use. I'm pretty much a "plug right in" kinda guy, using minimal effects.

I may use an EQ or a wah wah pedal once in a while, but for the most part it's one of my Fenders right into the amp, preferably a Marshall.

If a tube amp isn't available and I'm forced to play through a transistor, I'll use my Ibanez Tube Screamer for distortion.

My amp broke a while back so these days I'm Johnny Acoustic. I never used to use stomp boxes or anything, but I did like to take out all the mid-range settings on the amp, I felt it gave a much cleaner sound

Fender Strat into a Peavey Studio Pro 50 amp. It's a transistor amp but I use the built-in distortion as well as "clean" settings.

I have a bunch of pedal effects which I never really use anymore: wah-wah, sustain, delay, flanger, octave shifter, and a Rockman.

i use a Fender Strat into a 70watt Peavey/4x10 combo.I have the Peavey connected to a 2x12 Marshall cabinet.
Do not use much effects either other than the amps distortion...sometimes use delay, wawa, or chorus...

Normally I just plug in and go, I only use the distortion and EQ on a regular basis
other crappy pedals that i bought because they were pretty but never use

I'm in the process of buying a new guitar, any suggestions? I'd really like a 12 string Rickenbacker

Rickenbacker's are hands-down THE best sounding guitars around...if they didn't set you back a few grand, they'd be perfect.

Love the way they sound...
Hate the way they play. I never played a Ric that was comfortable.

Same thing for a Paul Reed Smith.

And OH how I enjoy laughing at those who still play a Parker Fly. Man I hated the way that guitar felt.

I'm still hoping to get my hands on my dream guitar though. A '57 Gretsch 6120.
That's your big boy there. It's like a Harley Davidson of a guitar. Anyone got about six or seven grand they can spare to help a brotha' out?

And as a side question. What gauge do you guys use? A few years ago I had to go up to 11's cuz my meatfists were snappin' 10's like cappellini.

I've gone from 11's to 10's to 9's in recent years, mostly because I've been playing more lead.

As a rhythm player, the heavier the better.

Agreed.

I don't do a lot of solo's, but when I do, it sure wears on my fingers. I still prefer it though. Thank you box method!

And here's food for thought considering solo's and heavier strings. Stevie Ray played on 12's.

Stevie also tuned down a half step, like Hendrix and countless others. I just can't do it, though. I like being in perfect pitch.

My open G tuned guitar has only 5 strings (no low E) and the A and high E strings are tuned down a whole step. No matter what gauge I use, they feel like rubber bands.

I only got an electric about a year ago, so I've been kinda thrown into learning a lot about it fast. I have a Epi Les Paul that I usually just plug straight in. I got a Marshall amp a little while back, an AVT 150 watt that I can't wait to crank (I've never had it up beyond 15 percent and already the neighbors complained). It has a bunch of effects and channels, really nice.

I was so used to heavy strings on my acoustic that the electric strings seemed so wimpy. Right now I use 10's, which seems ok, since I have to do a little string bending here and there.
