View Full Version : What is it about Led Zeppelin?

Ok, so maybe I maybe get hung for this but anymore, I am just not seeing the big deal about led Zeppelin. Don't get me wrong, I respect everything that they have done for the world of music.
As I grew out of high school and discovered other bands who came out before them like The Stooges, MC5, Blue Cheer or early Alice Cooper my disgust for them grew. I have been hearing the same 5 songs on the radio for the last 10 years and am just not seeing what the big deal is. I just think there were so many others who were better and just didn't get the recognition. I will throw early Grand Funk in there as well because that first record just rules! The only parts about Zep I really like anymore is Bonham's drums and Jones' bass. I dont see the big deal about Plant's vocals and the same with Page's guitar. I just don't see it. Am I nuts?
Let me know what the music lovers on here think. I have read some really good insights on music here and am curious what others think. I also think I may get shredded for this because in my own way I am dissing Zeppelin, but hey, thats how I feel.

Amen. Except I was the reverse. I heard all the classic punk and power pop stuff first, and didn't hear Zeppelin until I was like 19. It wasn't bad, just very "is this IT?" I admire most of whom they've influenced and what they started, but as a band themselves they just leave me cold.
They're the musical equivalent of a sports car. You play and scream "big" enough, and everyone thinks their cock isn't tiny.

Hey, to each his or her own. And you're right -- hearing the same 5 songs repeated ad nauseum on the radio disgusts a Zeppelin fan like me.
Actually, I didn't like Zeppelin til high school when I started playing guitar. I liked Jimmy Page's guitar work electrically as well as accoustically. That's probably why my favorite Zeppelin album is Zeppelin III. Most of my favorite songs are the ones that don't get a lot of radio airplay (thankfully). I've had my fill of "Stairway", "Fool in the Rain" and "Whole Lotta Love".

I like Zeppelin, but like Sabbath better. And this fight FUCKING PISSES ME OFF!
The Zeppelin SHEEP think that when you say you like Sabbath better, you're somehow dissing Zeppelin. And that's just not so. I just like Sabbath a lot more because they were heavier, and darker. I still appreciate most of Zeppelin's library, but if giving the choice in our free society, I pick Sabbath.

If you've only heard the same 5 songs by them, how can you make a decision about such an eclectic band?

Why do people always compare Zeppelin and Sabbath? They sound nothing alike...

pick up "The Song Remains The Same"
Jimmy Page is arguably the best guitar player there has ever been...
John Bonham is arguably the best drummer there has ever been...
both unique and trendsetting...as well as the Music they created...
Robert Plant's voice fit the band perfectly but i would never rate him in the top ten...
I grew up with Zeppelin and also enjoy today's music and the music inbetween...
Led Zeppelin deserves every bit of recognition they receive...

I dig Zep. They are better than most bands that people idolize.

I love Zeppelin and believe that they rightfully have earned their reputation with 3 hour concerts , multiple tours of the US ( I think 4 alone in 1969 just before they got signed to atlantic) and their almost unparalled musical ability. The sheer chemistry they had was amazing. They could jam with the best of them and they could rock with the best of them. They could be trippy and they could be real. They could be wild and calm in the same breath. Thats why many people think they are one of the best rock bands ever.[center] <P>

Fluffernutter,
You definitely have to listen to more than what is on the radio to appreciate zeppelin. Pick Zeppelin 3, Houses of the Holy, or Physical graffiti. Skip all of the tunes that are played to death on the radio.
They could play great blues, strong rock and roll, and some great mellow stuff.
Also unlike today's music you can hear almost every note that Jimmy is playing.
There is a Santa Claus. Ron and Fez are finally live in DC. Philly is next. Thank God Infinity finally came to their senses.

first of all, everyone is
allowed to like/dislike
whatever they please. with
that said, i think you might
be missing some of the
best aspects of zep. first,
dont listen to the songs on
the radio- some of their
best stuff isnt the hits. plus
when you hear all of their
music you can hear the
amazing range of styles,
and you can hear that All of
their songs are quality- no
fillers. secondly, i never
was a big fan of plasnt's
voice or page's guitar; what
got me was the production-
the whole sound, to me,
sounds like the hammer of
the gods.

I got into Zeppelin my senior year of high school. A friend of mine bought me IV and the song that blew me away wasn't "Stairway" but "When the Levee Breaks" after hearing that I went Zep crazy finding everything I could on the band and I liked at least 85% of it. The thing about Zeppelin is the fact that the music is good. And even a kid in 1995 almost 20 years after they ENDED could be blown away by what they did musically. That's what makes the band legendary. Good music is good music no matter what the generational gap is. The same thing goes for Sabbath. Good music will ALWAYS be good music.
You're saying strange things....STOP IT!!!!

Believe me, I have listened to all the deep tracks and loved every album when I was in high school and up until a few years ago. It is not that I have no respect for what they have done but I just think that so many other bands have done it better. I just got into Grand Funk, Alice Cooper, Blue Cheer, MC5 and The Stooges like 6 years ago and they blew me away so much more than what the Zeppelin records did. I tried not to compare but the more I would listen to the zep records, the more I would dig out the Stooges, grand Funk or MC5. Up until I heard those bands, yeah, Zeppelin was a common listen for me but after hearing those bands some of who put out classic records before Zep put out their first album. After I heard those, the Zeppelin records began to collect dust and I just didn't see the big deal. Maybe it was their longevity. Maybe it was over hype and media blitz. Maybe it was just the pure talent and i am missing something really big. if thats the case then I am the dumbass and i guess I just will never get it.
I am gonna attempt to listen to them again and see if there is any spark left in them and if my opinion changes, well hey, then I was missing something. I hope it doesn't come to where I have to get rid of the records.

If you'd like to hear the genius of the creative forces behind Zeppelin, buy No Quarter. Zeppelin was one of the first fusion bands when the word fusion didn't even apply to music...a perfect hybrid of blues and rock and roll. They had a lot of soul. Compositionally and lyrically they have no equal...and yes that's just my opinion but it's a prevalant one. You won't find a band who's songs are more ubiquitous and associated with the building blocks of modern rock and roll as we know it than Led Zeppelin.
How can you even put Sabbath and Zeppelin in the same paragraph? They play two completely different styles of music. You're talking about these bands like they are the Jets or the Giants and that's totally ludicrious. If anything its like the Jets and the Yankees.
Anyway, No Quarter...infusing thier classics with indian rythmns...it's a brilliant album. I could listen to it for hours.
Buy every album and see for yourself. Buy a concert movie of them live. Buy Physical Graffiti. Go see Page and Plant in concert.
And stop listening to music on the radio. Completely. If you don't know why, ask someone who does. Modern radio killed music.

AMEN! AMEN! AMEN! I didn't even think that was going to come up but somehow it always does. I am gonna go through the week and listen to the Zep records again. If anything maybe a light will be turned on again. In no way do i listen to the radio for my music but whn i do switch stations it is always the Zeppelin I seem to hear. I know they along withother bands have deep cuts, which far outweigh the singles. Eddie Trunk is great because he plays these cuts. I know the answer to this but the question mustbe asked, why do radio stations play the same damn thing and ignore the best songs? Again I know the answer but it really is getting old.

Fluffernutter,
I am not real familiar with Grand Funk railroad, Alice Cooper, and the MC 5. I do know that they came out of the midwest in the early 70's.
Zeppelin put out it's 1st record in 68. Zeppelin 2 came out in 69 with little to no air play. The band rarely put out singles, but almost all of their albums went to number 1 on the charts.
Zeppelin was not around for a long time 12years give or take. 10 albums. 7 of wich are very good.
1. Zeppelin 3
2. Physical Graffiti
3. Houses of the Holy
4. The Song Remains the Same
5. Zeppelin 4
6. Zeppelin 2
7. Presence
8. Led Zeppelin
9. In Through the out Door
10. Coda - (don't waste your money.
I got into Zeppelin late around 77 I was only 12. I was so pissed when Bonham died I was going to see them in DC during that In through the outdoor tour.
If you have any recommendations on Grand Funk, Alice Cooper, or MC 5 albums I would love to give them a spin.

I'm with Fluffer. I can respect Zeppelin, but a band like The MC5 or The Stooges just seem so much more primal and energetic. I think I'll stick with them.
I think your "classic" band is either Zeppelin or The Ramones. Gimme the bruddas any day of the week.

though i would take the ramones over zep anyday, they were a powerful musical force.
i think the problem a lot of people have with them is the screeching vocals of the old lemon squeezer, plant. his voice is fine on the more subtle tunes, but when he starts screaming and moaning it becomes the equivelent of scraping fingernails on a blackboard.

Fuck all this talk about Zeppelin and The Stooges and MC5...
The only band you should be listening to is the Rolling Stones.

If you have any recommendations on Grand Funk, Alice Cooper, or MC 5 albums I would love to give them a spin.
Alice Cooper - Love it To Death
MC5 - Kick Out The Jams
MC5 - Thunder Express (Live)
Grand Funk - Grand Funk
These records all blew my mind and yeah Jersey Rich, I am not even mentioning the Stones becasue in so many respects they cannot even be touched. In the same respect that is why I have not mentioned the Yardbirds.

I think Zep's music is all about Bonham. That mofo could lay a killer drum track.
