View Full Version : How long until a thread is too old?

This question isn't in the FAQ, i think. :)

I check the board every couple of days. When I do I don't read everyone. Sometimes a thread I want to reply to hasn't been replied to in a couple of days.

That got me thinking.

When do you let a thread die?

Is any on the first page ok to reply to, the second....

I'll always let a two day old thread die unless I have something fantastic to contribute to it. Anything over a week and it better be brilliant, beyond that, let it die.

For perusing threads, I'd say stick to the first page.

But if you wanted to start a new thread on a subject, and you find an old one on the same subject, contribute it there.

I tend to wish a horrible death on people who bring up a thread that's 8 months old just to say "yeah."

It's never too old as long as you have something valuable to contribute. And for God's sake, don't be one of those tools who bring up ancient threads just so they go right to the top. That's just assinine.

You, armymad, are also completely retarded. In fact, I didn't want to name names, but you were the person I was talking about in my first reply, the guy who brings up an old thread just to say "yeah".

Whatever Armymad says to do, it's usually a good idea of what to avoid doing.

Well, in my humble opinion a general topic (like, "What's your favorite food," or "Best songs ever") can always be revived. Better to bring back an old thread than start a new one about the same topic.

A perfect example of a thread being too old are the "event" threads, such as the Big Ass Night of Fights thread Jeff started in February (basically saying people were selling tickets when the tickets were free). Obviously, it's pointless to "top" this conversation.

Think before you revive an old thread.

As MS FUZZYBUTT said,

Think before you revive an old thread.

Good advice.

To go along with this is PATCHES observation that

It's never too old [to reopen a thread] as long as you have something valuable to contribute.

If there's something to add and it's topical and relevant, it's fine to reopen an old thread. If it's no longer topical let it die. Reopening an old thread with one word is always inappropriate.

It dependson the thread. some have a long life, others are old almost right away.

I'd say this thread was old by 2:04am on Oct 21.

If it wasn't for old threads, I tell ya, I wouldn't have no threads at all....and that ain't NO lie.....

Anyway, I like seeing threads someone made up 4 days before that no one replied to, and just give them a little Thread CPR. It's what I do.
