View Full Version : My fingers are numb

Two of them, my pinky and my ring finger on my left hand. They're not numb all the time, it comes and goes in waves. I've been noticing it for maybe a week, probably a bit less. Sometimes they'll have almost no sensation at all, but that only lasts a couple of minutes, then it dies down. Most of the time, it's just a slight pins and needles. I've tried to pinpoint it down to find a cause like if I'm leaning on my left arm a lot, but I don't really see a pattern. Obviously I should get this checked by a doctor, but it's got me a bit freaked out. Could it be something serious like, I don't know, nerve damage or something, or is it more likely a minor problem?

I've had that exact feeling, same fingers, same arm. It happened on and off for about two days, and I haven't felt it before or since. What the hell is this? Do I have a clot I don't know about?

More than likely it's a lack of decent circulation. Stretching can help, as well as making sure you drink plenty of water. If you've done all that, then I'd suggest you go see a Doctor.
But don't be too worried, about it, the sensation will return, the problem happens when your finger turns blue or you develope gangrene.

You need to have a doctor check it out but based on your description and fingers involved it sounds like cuticle tunnel syndrome. An NCV study is the only way to tell for sure.
Depending on the severity you may need surgery to move the nerve running through the cuticle tunnel to the other side of your elbow.
Go see your doctor.

Blak, check with your doctor. Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is not out of the question. No joke.

I don't think you need to go to a doctor unless you aren't feeling well, most likely all they will do is prescribe you something.
I don't know if you believe in chiropractors, but I go to one. Most minor problems like headaches and lack of circulation are caused by a pinched nerve in your spine. It's not serious, everyone gets them. The different nerves in the spine controls the messages sent to your brain for a specific part of your body. Most likely it's a pinched nerve blocking the circulation causing the numbness. I would recommend a chiropractor. I go once an month to keep my spine aligned and I feel great.
...I also feel like an infomercial now...lol ... hope you feel better

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is not out of the question
Yeah, I thought about that, but I thought that only came from years of repeated movement, like typing or something, and I really don't do anything that involves any type of repetetive motion. I mean it's not often that I put my hand through the same motion over and over and over . . .uhhhhhhhhh. Oh shit, I gotta see a doctor.

But why would I feel this in my left fingers if I'm right-handed?

Actually, Mojo, I'm rightie too, but as the great Scott Ferrell said you gotta 'shake it uuuup!' I've trained my left to the job, because the right has to work the mouse. Stop, pause, rewind. God, I love cable modem.

BLAKJEEZIS - Many people have suggested CARPAL TUNNEL SYNDROME. Based on your description, it can easily be ruled out. Carpal tunnel is a repetive stress injury (but it can be truamatically induced). More importantly, you complain of pain in your pinky and ring fingers. Carpal tunnel affects only the thumb, index and long finger. Based on your symptomatology you do NOT have carpal tunnel.
Your problem fingers are your pinky and ring finger which point to a potential problem with the CUTICAL TUNNEL. That is not caused by RSI but rather by something very simple (such as resting your arm (close to your elbow) at the edge of your desk, or driving with your arm resting on the window.)
The only way to see is with an EMG/NCV study (Electromyography and nerve conduction velocity).
Regarding chiropractors: They are ONLY licensed to treat the neck and back. Their effectiveness at that is questionable but they seem to help some people. I haven't met a chiropractor who felt he couldn't heal all ailments from toe ulcerations to migranes with "adjustments." Caveat Emptor.

HK, I had this feeling in the same two fingers for almost two days straight, and then it vanished. No matter what position I put my arm in, the "pins and needles" feeling remained.
