View Full Version : Good songs ruined by commercials...

I hate this. I will never be able to hear Bob Seger's "Like a Rock" without thinking about muddy Chevrolet pick-up trucks. And now UPS is using the theme song from Cheers.
I just hate when a song or story or movie is ruined because of advertising. That's the worst.
~Thanks to PanterA for this kick ass sig!~

Aggie...here in NY there is a commercial for the lottery that uses Barenaked Ladies "If I Had A Million Dollars", a cute little ditty that used to bring a smile to my face. Now I cringe everytime I hear it.

I still love the Buzzcocks' "What Do I Get?", but hearing it in an SUV comemrcial broke my heart. Same with Gus Gus' "Ladyshava", Beastie Boys' "Shadrach", and especially Nick Drake's "Pink Moon". I've loved him for years, but when a friend walked into my room and said, "isn't this that song by the BMW guy", I almost killed him.

i've never liked the barenaked ladies. now i hate them. god, canadian bands suck.
blame the labels. they own the rights, which doesnt seem right.
i did like how nissan used 'wicked garden' for their trucks. and 'she sells sanctuary' for one of their cars. i forget which, and thats always a sign of good advertising.

I think that IBM commercial with the company trying to get the two "rockers" to sell them a song for their commercial says it all.
"What's the problem?"
"Our customers hate us. Our systems can't talk to each other and yadda yadda..."
"And you expect a song to fix that?" (busts out laughing)
I wish these companies would realize that paying a band/record company to use a "hip, new song" doesn't make us consider them "hip".

How about CCR's Fortunate Son being used in the Levi's commercials? It's so stupid cuz it's supposed to be a very patriotic commercial, but the song isn't exactly patriotic. Of course they never get up to those parts of the song.

I have a different view. (Of course)
I hate the Barenaked Ladies. I hate every song they do. But for some reason I like it when it is used in the Lottery spot.
Godsmack will work anytime the military is involved. As a mater of fact, the Saliva Click Click Boom song would be good for the Marines.
I hate the Dirty Vegas song with that annoying chick in the car doing the 80's "pop" thing. Note: nothing more annoying than a girl trying to be cool. It doesn't work.
The Daft Punk song "One More Time" sucks. It was used in everything by no talent agencies and producers. I think the reason they used it was because the previous album by Daft Punk was very funky.
In General, it is very rare that a song will "Work" in a commercial and not Piss people off.
But lately I have noticed that terrible songs will work in a 30sec spot but are un-listenable at full length.
Example:
NY Lottery - Barenaked ladies - "If I had a million Dollars"
Mitsubishi Lancer - Barenaked ladies - "One Week"
Mitsubishi Eclipse - The Wiseguys "Start the Commotion"
Gap featuring Juliet Lewis and Daft Punk - "Digital Love"
The surprising thing is that Radio Stations like Z100 try their hardest to play these songs.
Remember, these songs are not really meant to make a product seem hip. These song placements are to pull "You" the target audience, out of the kitchen to look and see what's on TV. You are more inclined to watch the ad, at least once, if there is a snappy little song - whether you like or not. Actually you tend to remember Ads that you hate.
Strange but true
Class dismissed.

That song has been in the commercial for almost as many movies and TV shows as POD's "Alive" was last year.

you a yankees fan? if so, how can you not like jeter? the guy's MONEY. every october he does everything he can to win. he's a rock. i was honestly not a huge fan of his until postseason 2001. besides his infamous shovel pass, he also hurt himself in game 5 of the lds, which definitely hurt the team in the Series. i'll never forget how he threw out bautista at 3rd when he caught a ball in mid-air, turned, and threw. he, is a YANKEE.
