Explaining the Message Board(aka Looking like an ASS)

On atleast three occasions this weekend I found myself in a situation where I had to dicuss RonFez.net to other people that had no clue.
After doing so, I came away with a feeling like I was a complete ass.
For example...
Other Person: "Hey! So how do you know these people?"
Me: "Well I met them all through a message board on the internet."
Other Person: "I see"
Me: (To myself) God I'm an ass.

So I pose this question...When you find yourself in such a situation (Having to explain this place)
How do you go about it?

The same thing happened to me this weekend. My friend was asking me why people have names like Blakjeezis, AngryMissyPoo and Tenbatsuzen...She was saying, "Who the hell are these people and why do they have such weird names"..I kinda had no answer except "I think you mean Angrymissy Baby".....

What explanation is necessary? Take the upper hand. If they act like you're weird for talking to people with names like Blackjeezis and Pootertoot, ask them if they use IM or message boards, and what their name is.

If they use it and they have their own name as their SN, tell them that "that's imaginative". If they have a weird name, ask how it's any weirder than "sheeplovr" or "Yerdaddy". If they don't use IM or post to boards, tell them that they "wouldn't understand until they try it. But it don't make them a bad person".

You don't need to be ashamed of posting on a message board, but that British thing....

Explaining being on a message board isn't the problem. Explaining why I hang out with people at bars that I have met over the internet is another thing. The most common questions are "How often do they talk about Star Trek?" and "Have you ever gotten together for some D&D?"

I don't regret meeting anyone here. I consider a few of you out there my closest friends. I don't have any problems telling people that I met a few friends through the internet since most people do these days anyway. The worst part is trying to get around telling other friends and relatives the fact of how Pootertoot and I met. "Yeah umm there's this messageboard on the internet about a radio talk show that I listen to. I started talking to this guy Pootertoot in posts about Asian boys and anal fistings, then in IMs, then on the phone, then we met a year ago at a Halloween bar crawl." How sad is that? I don't regret a minute of it. :)

I have found some good conversation pieces here and have brought them up to the "outsiders" if you will, and they are just looking at me like I am on crack. There is some good conversation going on here and I have learned quite a bit. But yeah trying to tell someone else they do look at you like you were just batching at the dinner table. I do what others have said "I met them at a bar." Which isnt a lie, it just is not the full story. And like Earth2Ron said, who really gives a fuck anyway what people think. Most people are conformists assholes anyway who wouldnt know a good time if ya smacked them on the ass with it and gave them five dollars to boot (have to give credit to sheepy for this line). As long as you are happy in your endeavours that is what matters.
