It's the sound of gas, Nitrogen I believe, that has built up in your joints being released.

I also have that very same habit. It really helped me avoid a lot of unnecessary fights when I have cracked my neck in the past.

The knuckle joint is surrounded by a fluid which is encased in a capsule. When we crack our knuckles, gas (I believe oxygen) which previously disolved in the fluid forms a small bubble, and releases making a cracking sound.

usally in my neighborhood the sound of someone cracking their knuckles happens right before someones getting thier ass kicked by 12 year old kids.

HK was pretty much right. Your knucks are surrounded by synovial (hence forth refered to as "knuckle juice") fluid for lubrication. The knuckle juice contains about 15% carbon dioxide. When you pop your knucks you're creating negative pressure on the knuckle juice drawing the CO2 out of solution and forming a bubble. When the bubble pops, the knuckle juice collapses and you hear a pop. At least that's the case in most poping joints. Some times it's just seeds... get it... seeds... popping joints! Ha ha ha!

Is it wrong I can crack my right wrist? Has years of masturbation, videogames and my computer mouse caused this?

I like to do it to creep out my friends.

Aside from the knuckles, the cracks you hear from other joints are usually caused by ligaments being stretched over bone.

Sigh. When will they invent a robot body I can download my brain into. The only sounds you hear then are squeaks and that's easily remedied with some wD-40

There's an old home remedy/wives tale that you can spray WD-40 on achey joints to ease the pain... and you don't even need to be a robot... with laser eye vision.
