A man and woman from New Mexico are in Beth Israel hospital suffering from Bubonic Plague. Check out the whole story when you http://wcbs880.com/topstories/topstoriesny_story_311065546.html.

I thought we irradicated the plague, but apparantly 7-10 people in the south west contract it every year. What is this 1700??

Oh and by the way its not contagious from person to person. No worries.

And if they die, the bodies will just be catapulted over the walls of Jersey, right?

To make a slight correction, sewer rats were not the cause of the Bubonic Plague. It was the fleas that lived on them, they were the cause of the Plague.

I thought we irradicated the plague

we never really did. we controlled it or contained it by controlling the rat population and through sanitation. yersinia never really reached our shores untill the early 1900's. in europe, black death, the epidemic in the fourteenth century ended up killing 25 MILLION people. the way it entered the U.S. was through the ports of California according to Jawetz. and its been endemic to rodents in europe and asia and the western USA ever since mainly because the rodents are resistant to the disease. eliminate the vector(rat flea) which is virtually impossible unless we go around killing every rat there is in sight, is the only definative control and eradication measure i think. but then still we'd have other reservoirs to worry about like squirrels and prairie dogs. the latter being the #1 reservoirs in the U.S. humans are only accidental hosts and there is a vaccine, but its only available for high-risk populations.

I, ah...I'm not much of a "word" person...

Nah, that's just one of those cutesy bits of trivia that makes people feel so clever.

This couple was in the paper the other day again. Apparently the lady had a pretty easy go at it, but the fellow is still at Best Israel and is beginning to see some improvements. He lost his feet though. I'm surprised New Yorkers are more concerned with having Plague germs floating around the city. Anyone know what the vectors of the Plague are?
