Question all...is it necessary or(mandatory) to take the 5hr class before tackling the road test?

Road experience counts more.
My dad started teaching me to drive when I was 15. I also took Driver's Ed. I passed the road test the first time with flying colors.
Get as much road time practice as possible.

Just make sure he teaches you the three-point turn, parallel parking.
Get a booklet from DMV. Practice all the maneuvers.
Good luck!
ps-- Check to see if that 5 hour class will "count" when you apply for insurance. If it does, it might be worth it, esp. if you live in NJ!

ALICE your dad sounds great. Teaching a kid to drive can be a great pleasure for a parent. I'm glad you had the opportunity to share it with him.

FATYLVR20 - Please check out this website from the DMV http://www.nydmv.state.ny.us/license.htm#about

In pertinent part it states that after getting your learner's permit, "The DMV recommends that you take professional driving lessons or practice with a driver who has a large amount of experience."
However there is a MANDATORY pre-licensing course (or school or college driver education course.) Most commercial driving schools licensed by the DMV offer the DMV-approved pre-licensing course.
After this course you have to pass a multiple choice test. You get a "pre-licensing course certificate" when you pass this test.
Schedule a Road Test. Pass it. Happy motoring.
EDIT - 1/2 my reply was ommitted the first time I posted, so I added it back.
