I ask because I constantly hear the pubescent girls on my club team talking to each other about "how fat they are" I look at them and I see only fit, athletic, and trim bodies. My worries, especially when I get reports that one of them is puking in the lockerroom is that these girls are endangering their bodies in some unnecessary attempt to lose weight. I know advanced signs such as scarred hands and rotted teeth, but not much about early signs of it. Any help would be appreciated.

Let me start off by saying that my qoute is a joke, so don't take offense anyone. Anorexia Nervosa and Bulimia Nervosa both are problems caused by the girls want to become perfect or a fear of becoming fat. Anorexia is defined as the state of being unwilling or unable to be above 85% of your target weight. One extremely important sign that a girl is dangerously anorexic is that she starts missing numerous periods in a row.
Anorexia effects 1-2400 adolecents. 95 % of those are girls.
Bulemia is also related to Anorexia. It is normally after a long diet or fast when girls binge or feel like they've binged. Because of their extreme fear of becoming overweight they decide to throw up the food so they don't gain weight.
Once a girl throws up for the first time she might think that it is a resonable way to live life. Often they will hide food for later binges which they will throw up. Thus making a tragic cycle.

While the exact triggers are unknown many feel that the media is putting out an image of women that is beyond the grasp of any normal person. Whatever the causes it is very dangerous because it will cause malnutrition, which will lead to fainting spells, And in bulemia all of the stomach acid will damage the throat, mouth and teeth.
As with any mental illness you have to proceed with extreme caution. The person with this condition will need to be confronted, however I'm not trained in how to do this so I won't offer any advice, hopefully horde king will help more here. i hope that this was helpful.

I want to date an anorexic chick so that if we are weighed together we'll appear to be a normal couple.

There's lots of info here. It might be worthwhile for you to have someone come and talk to your girls who can give them some info. on the disorders and the dangers.

People are often very quick to point to an eating disorder in situations such as you describe, and I will certainly talk of them, but another possibility to consider is "Body Dysmorphic Disorder". In essense this is a preocupation with a perceived deficit in appearance. If the deficit is real, the preocupation must be excessive. The preoccupation has to cause significant distress and interfere in social, occupational or accademic funtioning. Body Dysmorphic Disorder is not diagnosed if the concern about appearance is limited to being too "fat"

Many people are very weight conscious and don't have an eating disorder. Skinny people usually stay skinny b/c they are careful not to overeat.

Eating disorders by contrast are serious psychological conditions that invariably cause severe physical problems. The eating disorders are the concrete behavior that is expressed, but the underlying cause of the eating disorder are very deep and severely repressed.

There is a very high incidence of among sexually abused girls and anorexia. That is often the hidden reason behind the behavior. The control exerted over eating is one reaction to abuse, where the child has no control. Of course, the immediate, life-threatening illness must be treated before we worry about cause.

There are 2 main types of eating disorders with 2 subdivisions apiece.
1. Anorexia Nervosa
A. Restricting food
B. Binging/Purging food
2. Bulimia Nervosa
A. Purging Type
B. Non-purging type

ALL eating disorders involve difficulty in accurately perceiving body shape and weight.

At it's most basic anorexics will not maintain a minimally normal body weight (85% of normal). Anorexics not only limit their caloric intake, but they also exercise hours a day. They also can purge (this is not limited to bulimia).

Anorexia is often comorbid w/depression and obsessive compulsive thoughts (about food). Many anorexics also have a personality disorder.

The long term mortality rates for anorexics is 10%.

Bulimia in a nutshell involves binge eating and compensatory ways to get rid of the calories consumed. (Most common method - vomitting)

Bulimics tend to be ashamed of their condition. Anorexics are often proud of the control they exhibit.

Bulimics are often normal weight (or close to it).

Often comorbid with bulimia are mood disorders and anxiety disorders. Interestingly the lifetime prevelence of substance abuse or dependency disorder is at least 30% among bulimics!

SWIMCOACH - If you hear that a student is puking in the bathroom or lockeroom, call her home and tell a parent. If it happens more than once, tell the principal and guidance counselor that you suspect an eating disorder. They should know what to do.

All I know about this is that i had an ex-girlfriend who did this and it eventually led to our demise. To my eyes, she was perfect not fat or anything. Really really fit. A sexual assault eventually led to her bulemia because of feeling used and degraded.
I just know it was really f'ed up for her and she would tell me how the back of her throat would get sore and she would have violent stomach pains. She was also losing bits of her hair and the enamel on her teeth was going away. All of this is noticeable to the naked eye but can lead to so much of a greater damage. Society tells us we should all look a certain way to be accepted or no one will love us. How much bullshit is that? To me and I am sure many others, beauty stems from the inside. Why she could not see that or accept the fact that she would be loved for who she was is beyond me. I still love her to this day but like all the rest of her friends, she turned everyone away and continued to suffer from this disease. She wanted me around then she didn't and then she just said to go away, like everyone else. I still want to call her and drive by her place sometimes and just have very fond memories. Man this brings back a lot. I eventually joined a bulemia support group in yahoo so i could lkearm what she was going through and what she was dealing with. To me both diseases are horrible but bulimia tends to hurt you a little bit more because of the strain on the internal organs. I remember her having somekind of mental thing where if you would say she looked good or nice or anything like that she would take it the opposite because she would think you know what she is doing but you actually don't. Like she feels patronized . It is some f'ed up shit but can be helped. I'll keep it in my thoughts and prayers and hope for the best. If there is any kind of suspicion about this with the girls on your team, I would say get someone in there like a school psychiatrist or counselor of some kind. Hope I made some jumbled sense here :)

Its true that it effects women mostly, but there is a minority of men who are effected by both as well.

CYBERSOLDIER - More than 90% of anorexics and bulemics are female.

I see only fit, athletic, and trim bodies.

If they look good (and not painfully thin) they are almost certainly not anorexic.

Be alert to more reports of vomiting or other purging and alert the appropriate authorities to the possibility of bulemia if it occurs.

The one girl I am particularly worried about is constantly arguing with her father and pushing herself to the point of injuring herself. We already have one girl in the older group who has anorexia/bulimia and I don't want this girl to end up like the latter.
