"Save Ron and Fez In NYC" Sky Writing Campaign

How much of an impact would it be to see "Save Ron & Fez In NYC, 102.7FM" up above and over Manhattan? It would be such a great impact and possible make some headlines. If it can be done for O&A with the slogan "WOW" across the sky, it can be done for our guys. With the story in the Daily News, the hundreds of letters, postcards, and phone calls hitting Infinity and now this happening....we will really save our boys to stay where they belong!

I've researched a couple of websites that will do this. I'm also reaching out to you, if anyone has any information about doing this, or if you know anyone that can do this, it would be appreciated.

Also, I know this is quite expensive. So far the quotes I see are anywhere from $1000.00 to $3000.00. Believe me if I could do it, I would pay for it on my own. I was thinking of possibly starting a donation fund for this. If 100 members donated $10.00, $20.00, or even $30.00, we could do this. It would only take 100 or so members! Think of the wonderful outcome!

It would make an IMPACT. Obviously there won't be an address to write to Mr. Sykes at Infinity up in the air. We're trying to make some headlines and perk some people's attention. It owuld make a big impact. Also I've seen skywriting over the GWB and the Hudson River, up that way. It was picture perfect. It was also done for O&A too.

They only sky write on a nice day so I'm sure people will see it. Plus if this can really happen with the help and support from everyone, it will be announced here so everyone can try and spot it and take pictures.

Regarding the skywriting/banner planes:

Not too many outfits do skywriting any more. Paul the pilot is part of a dying breed. Short messages are the norm in that business, so "SAVE RON AND FEZ" may work, but the banner plane idea is somewhat better.

I have a friend who works with one of the local outfits (largest in the country, in fact) and here are some of the costs involved:

~$3 per letter to make the sign,
Between $500 and $600 per hour to fly the message (on site time) There may be transport costs involved, but they shouldn't be more than $50 - $100

Right now, NYC is under flight restrictions, and flying over Manhattan itself is a no-no. I know a guy who just got his pilot's license revoked for doing so. Banner planes can get special permission from the FAA to fly over sporting events, and can fly planes up the rivers around Manhattan.

Serious consideration should be given to having the flight go over highways during rush hour (what else can you look at in bumper to bumper traffic?), such as the GSP, NJ TPKE., the Henry Hudson, the Belt, etc.

If this thing is going to go off, I'll see what I can do about getting a good price...

I just received some replies to my phone calls and emails and skywriting will be out of the question because they won't be available until March or April of next year.

One company said they can fly a banner around the proximity of Jacob Javits Center for a total of six times. I didn't go into the time of day but I will ask for around a time that's still light out before 4pm. He said this can be done within the next 2 to 3 weeks, the sooner the better. We can put 40 letters on the banner and that includes spaces. The cost for this is $775.00. This we can easily afford with everyone's kind donations. A possible sign for this could be:

Save Ron & Fez In NYC 102.7FM
7 to 11pm

This has 39 spaces which would be perfect.

The next company I spoke with can fly a banner as close as they can to the GWB for a total of 3 hours during the day for $1400.00. This can also be done within the next 2 to 3 weeks.

So guys it's up to all of you. But, one thing, we need to be serious here. I want everyone to vote for either the 775.00 or the 1400.00 banner. I also want the people who say they will donate money to ACTUALLY donate money.

This will NOT be done if all the money is not collected and I don't even want to go through the horror of returning money if this is not done.

So please, if you are serious about making an impact that would hit headlines and turn more than a few heads please be serious about this.

I will make a decision based on everyone's votes by Thursday 5pm.

Then we will proceed with how you can donate your money. It will most likely be collected through PayPal. I really don't want checks to be sent to me, but if that's your only alternative then I can make an acception.

So please decide between 775.00 or 1400.00!

Also the guy I spoke to about the one for 775.00 said they make wonderful impact over the area we want.

Ok I will check over the major highways during rush hour. One problem with that is that rush hour is now dark. Even if it circles 6 times around the proximity of the Javits Center, alot of people on foot in the city around there will see it in midday.

Also the other company is another option. Three hours around GWB to 34th and back and forth for 3 hours. Yes it's 1400.00 but it's for 3 hours. I can ask if they can fly around for an hour and a half? Half the price.

I believe we should give consideration to choosing the lower priced plane banner, and with any additional money left over, purchasing additional space in a paper or billboard truck, etc.

Yes I agree and I already spoken to someone who can take care of the press part while doing this banner. If the press can get a hold of this and report what the banner said ALONG with the large number of people that will se it, it's impact. Listen we need to do something, ANYTHING at this point to be heard. It shouldn't matter what it is, just make sure we're HEARD.

Also if we wait until the summer don't you think it will be too late? They fly banners at this time of year, its just that they are flown before dark.

The letter writing, phone calls, even an "informational picketing" outside of Infinity are all effective. My only question about a plane is the season and weather conditions, which I believe is a valid point. Not a criticism, we have to do whatever it takes. I'm behind anything that gets the message out.

I have excellent news! I spoke with an AerialBanners.com representative over the phone just now and they will give us a break and do it for $950.00 to fly from the GWB down the Hudson River to approximately 34th street where the no-fly zone starts for a total flying time of 2 hours! It's $450.00 per hour plus a $50.00 fee for the banner. We are allowed 50 spaces including letters and spaces on the banner. She is faxing me a worksheet as we speak so I can fax her back the message we want on the banner. The banner will be a one line banner that you see at beaches, sporting events, etc...She said this can be done next week. She also said this will be done from sunrise to sunset, she said do not worry about not seeing it, it will be done when it is sunny and bright out.

I am really excited about this ! This can happen and 2 hours is plenty of time to turn heads and give way to the press/media.

I don't know if you sent in the text for the banner, but I have a few suggestions:

1. Lose the www. before the ronfez.net (everyone knows that part and if you put ronfez.net in any browser, you'll get here).

2. Let's take advantage of the fact that R&F should be on the radio (albeit in replay) while the banner is flying.

3. The vast majority of people seeing the banner will be in their cars, so raise the priority of the call letters, and lower the website. Also, those looking at the banner while on the computer will have the time and inclination to read the whole thing while drivers will just be able to glance.

So, here's my suggestion (up to 50 characters):

Well I have good news and bad news....

Good news is the plane will still fly. Even better news is that the plane will be flying from the GWB down the Hudson River close to the West Side Highway past Chelsea Piers and down to Wall Street. Then it will fly to the Brooklyn Bridge then over to the Holland Tunnel, then Lincoln Tunnel and around again. I was informed by Keith the pilot that there is no longer a "no-fly zone". This means more exposure!!! :)

Bad news is I'm not sure when. The forecast for Friday's weather looks pretty ugly. They are forecasting cloudy skies with lots of wind and some rain here and there. Keith called me this morning and told me that if it's really windy it will be useless to fly the banner since it will not stay in place.

So, this creates a problem since all the hard work that Fuzzybutt and others did to get press releases all say the flight will be on Friday.

Keith told me that he will call me tomorrow and we will talk about the forecast for Friday if it changes. If it looks like it wont be very windy or rainy, he said he can fly. If it doesn't change then we will have to postpone the flight to Monday the 25th at the same time 12pm to 2pm. Unforunately with Mother Nature we have to wait until the last minute because who knows Friday morning it could be sunnny and perfect conditions to fly. So we have no choice but to be on stand-by. Keith also said he will be on stand-by and he has no problems flying last minute if the weather looks better.

So what do you guys think we should do about the press releases? I'm thinking the best thing is to send another press release saying that Friday's flight is WEATHER-PERMITTING. If the weather is inclement, the flight will be postponed until Monday the 25th from 12pm to 2pm.


I will keep you guys updated tomorrow and up to Friday morning if need be. Who knows decisions might change hour to hour on Friday.

that day, is it really a big deal?
The point is to get the media
coverage, if it rains and there are
stories in the paper, that just
extends the exposure window to
2 days.

It's not like angry hordes of

To the papers, the story is not

lengths to which fans will go to

Well I guess they'll use their common sense and see that it's raining and not good conditions for a plane to go out and wave a banner. They might just assume that it's postponed until the next business day which is Monday. Maybe snail mail can be sent anyway and they'll receive it possibly Friday and know that it was postponed until Monday.

You may also want to send a press release after it happens with pictures. I'm willing to take pictures from the Hudson River - NJ Side by Hoboken, There are several piers that you can get some good shots. I can forward them to you to include in any release. If you can get others along the route you can have multiple shots to include. <P>

Keith the pilot is calling me at 8pm tonight for the final word on what tomorrow's weather forecast will be. It looks grim calling for 80% chance of rain and cloud/fog all day. It's really leaning towards a flight for this Monday the 25th. I will update all of you after he calls me at 8pm. Please check this thread often because who knows things might change even tomorrow morning since he will be on stand-by for us.

I saw the plane fly high over Chelsea Piers. It was a beautiful moment. I took pictures and I will be getting them developed tomorrow and I will be scanning them!!! Wait until you see, it was breath-taking. It put a big grin on my face to see tons of other people around me look up and read the banner. I will write a big long thank you list to everyone who contributed later on tonight! Without ALL of your efforts this plane would have never flown. To be continued.......

I would like to thank Keith the Pilot from 1-800-SKY-SIGN for his wonderful maneuvering to get the word out in the best possible areas.
