Why are black people better athletes than white people?

Well it's true. Other than hockey, where most of the players come from nearly all white countries, black people improportionately outnumber white people in sports. I know it doesn't matter, but I am just curious as to why.

Was Jimmy the Greek right? Were the biggest and strongest slaves bred together, and that's why they are better athletes generations later?

Does it have something to do with bone structure?

Socio-economic reasons?

Enlighten me.

Sports Illustrated ran a great article on this Dec. 8, 1997 titled "What Ever Happened to the White Athlete?" Harry Edwards is a sports activist, sociologist at the University of California and consultant to the San Francisco 49ers. He is very well respected for his views on sports in society and race in sport. He had this to say in an article published in ColorLines magazine:

Well, the white athlete over the last fifty years has simply been displaced by a pool of largely untapped athletic talent, generated by a lack of alternative highprestige occupational opportunities for masses of young black males, and increasing females. I think that once this untapped pool of talent had access to three or four sports it was inevitable that ultimately blacks would end up representing disproportionately high numbers. That is what happen to the white athlete in basketball, football, track, not field, boxing and to a certain extent in baseball.

But in ninety-five percent of American sports the white athlete is there in numbers and dominant. The white athlete is there in swimming. The white athlete is there in diving. The white athlete is there in water polo. The white athlete is there in golf. The white athlete is there in tennis. The white athlete is there in badminton. The white athlete is there in auto racing. The white athlete is there in horse racing. The white athlete is there in soccer, walking, gymnastics, and all the winter sports in dominant numbers. What happened to the white athlete? The white athlete is there, except in those three, four, or five sports where blacks have had access.

The other thing that has happened is that blacks have changed the nature of some sports. Black culture, isolated from white society, from slavery right up to integration, developed styles of playing basketball, football, baseball, and boxing, that whites had to learn to accommodate to or get out of the sport. So if you'd brought in a point guard, who dribbled the ball through his legs, and passed the ball behind this back, you better have a guy to guard him. Otherwise you were at a severe disadvantage. What this generally meant was going into the black community to get someone who had played that kind of ball. Finally, whites have access to the full spectrum of sports, and the full spectrum of highprestige occupational positions. They are not channeled into sports in disproportionately high numbers, and that white talent for sports is spread out across all occupations, and across all sports. Well, blacks don't typically have those same opportunities.

Factoid: according to a book called Taboo: Why black athletes dominate sports and why we're afraid to talk about it (whew!) "Of the 32 finalists in the last four Olympic Men's 100 meter races, all of them were of west African descent. The probability of that occurring: less than 0.0000000000000000000000000000000001 percent." (that's 34 decimal places, folks).

I think it boils down to money. If you look at the sports that whites dominate, hockey, tennis, swimming, skiing, etc., all of theses sports take a fair amount of money to participate it. Money that a majority of blacks simply don't have.

There are two issues that need to be addressed.

The first is that blacks are better athletes than whites. It's not true. There is wide variety of athletic ability within the black and white population with some members of each group being total spazzes and the others being in terrific shape. Some whites are better athletes than some blacks and some blacks are better athletes than some whites.

The second issue to address is why certain sports are predominated by blacks. Historically, sports have been seen by many blacks as a way out of poverty and the ghetto. They feel that the opportunities presented to whites (such as advancement through education) are denied to them and instead focus their attention on playing basketball or other sport to the exclusion of almost everything else. Occassionally, one athlete emerges who is so spectacular that they make a zillion dollars and leave their former life without ever looking back. However, this attitude is dangerous. There are a tiny amount of spaces available on any sports team and the competition for those spots are intense. Yet many black (and other miniority children) say they don't have to do well in school b/c they will be professional ball players. This closes off the opportunity provided by education to lift them out of the cycle of poverty.

1. Genetics do seem to be at work here, as politically incorrect as some may find that statement. Take any 10 Blacks and 10 Whites of the street, and the odds are that you'll have a higher percentage of physically fit Blacks.

2. Blacks tend to have a harder life than most Whites, and are therefore less likely to become soft (out-of-shape).

3. Sports represent the best opportunity for most young Black males to make their way out of the 'hood, as opposed to education for Whites. Most White kids play sports recreationally, but Black kids see it as their only way out and are therefore much more motivated.

I think it is more due to "accessability". A lot of blacks learn to play basketball in their neighborhoods where playing basketball is a popular thing for kids to do after school or during the summer. Go to any city park in areas like the Bronx or Brooklyn and you will see tons of blacks playing basketball.

I believe the reason why there are so many Canadians in ice hockey is not so much that they are better than anyone else, but due to the fact that Canada is basically a frozen tundra most of the time with a lot of frozen lakes for kids to play ice hockey.

Arthur Ash became a famous tennis player (in a predominately white sport) not because he was black, but because his father worked for a club that had tennis courts, and introduced him to tennis at a very young age. A lot of people (including whites) can not normally afford tennis fees or to join tennis clubs.

Again, I don't think that any race is better than another at sports, but rather the accessability of the sport is the key.

As was seen at this summer's World Basketball Championship where the USA lost 3 of their last 4 games to finish in 6th place. The USA team had never lost using NBA players, winning 58 consecutive games.

There are a small but growing number of blacks in Swimming. And Some are starting to dominate: Sabir Muhammed, Anthony Nesty, to name a few.
I do think that there is a socio-economic reason that Swimming is predominantly white(remember the story about the swimmer from Africa in the last olympics? swimming in a 20 yard hotel pool for workouts and having expensive olympic swimming gear given to him by other olympians). And there is alot of $$$ to be made in swimming if you make it to the Olympics and get a medal. But you don't really hear about it. Major corporations like Phillips 66 Petroleum give "Sponsership Gifts" to Top level Swimmers and give bonuses for Gold medals, World Records, etc.

A buddy of mine in High School had his own hypothesis (i used hypothesis cause last time i said theory everyone busted my balls) on this... or atleast why black guys could run faster. He reasonded that the stereotype about "the blacks" is untrue. They can run faster causethey got smaller deeks. White guys deeks are all flopping around and smacking us in the legs when we're running, there-by slowing us down. Black guys can move their legs unhindered by their tiny little wangs.

even though i cant stand the pageantry of the olympics, it does represent the world's best. from that, i think we can definitively say they're the fastest, and can jump the longest distances. they're also the best boxers.

from american pro sports, they certainly have the edge in the nba and nfl. if i was drafting an nba team, i'd have shaq, kobe, duncan, mcgrady, and NOWITSKI. for my nfl team, i'd have black players in all the skill positions, except qb, where favre is still the king, but vick and mcnabb are right behind him.

baseball's probably the most balanced, except for pitching where i'd go with the white or latin players from the current rosters.

i guess i'm saying for the most part, blacks have proven to be better athletes.
