I guess only the old timers
will be able to weigh in on
this one, but with the 4th of
July coming up I got to
thinking how great it was back
in 1976 with America turning
200. Everything seemed to
revolve around it: we had
Bicentennial quarters, "A
Bicentennial Minute" on TV
every night, and all the fire
hydrants in my town were
painted red, white, and blue.
Looking back through older
eyes, I guess people got so
into it because they needed a
reason to feel patriotic again
after the Vietnam and
Watergate debacles. I still
can't believe it was 25 years ago.

I AM NOT OLD!!!!!

I remember it gvac.
There was a huge amount of ships coming in from all over the world, passing by the Verrazano Bridge off the coast of Bay Ridge. Thousands gathered along the shoreline,
the Belt Parkway was closed down and it was one big party.
At night, we shot rockets and threw blockbusters at a Russian ship that was anchored close to the shore.
They shined a bright light on us and we flipped them the bird and chanted "Fuck you"!!!
Yes, I am a patriot! ;)

Another memory: going to a Yankees game and seeing thousands of sailors in the upper deck getting wasted. Many came from countries where baseball is an oddity, and they had no clue what they were watching.

My favorite Bicentenial moments where when the "tall ships" regalia came sailing up the harbor about an hour before the biggest kick-ass fireworks display ever.

I still have my bicentential quarters. lol
