Finals are coming up and I was wondering... what is/was your study technique?
Do you go to the library or stay at home? Spend hours of intense study shortly before or linger over the books for a longer period of times? Study alone or in a group?

Use the Death Metal Study Method.

Act like you don't even have a test until the night before, and then learn everything you didn't in class.

This is how I got my solid B- average in High School!

Ever since high school, I typed up my handwritten class notes, then read the book taking notes as I read. Then I annotated the classroom notes to the book notes.

Every week, I'll review my typed notes. Before a test I'll highlight the portions of the notes I find problematic and print out a small study guide from them.

It's served me very well and I tend to recall the information learned much much longer than I would have from merely reading or notetaking alone.

I had the most difficulty with this system in my first year of law school, before I learned that reading old case law was the worst conceivable way to learn how to be an effective lawyer.

I wish I had been more disciplined with that annotating part every week. I'm catching up right now.

crim law and civ pro are open book so I feel a little better about them

My torts professor gave us a practice exam and I still don't know how he came up with some of the stuff in his answer.

P.S. did you use any commercial outlines?

Join a bar review course right away. When I was in law school in 1984, BarBri was the most popular. They give you commercial outlines that you can use to study for your tests and the bar.

I found the Nutshell series pretty good for real property and contracts.

Regarding Torts, just remember Staples vs the LIRR (Whoops, I meant Palsgraff)!

Watch porn. Seriously.

Being an artsy-fartsy creative writing kid, I was always awful at college-level math. To remember all the formulas and such, I'd just watch my favorite porn films while studying and doing sample problems. When I'd have to tackle the test, I'd just think of the specific scenes, and the math I was doing at the time just blended right in. Hypnotic.

That's actually the method outlined in the book Using Both Sides of Your Brain, which I read as part of my Psych 101 course as an Undergrad.

It helps your brain turn a massive amount of information into shorter chunks - beginnings and ends - which your brain will process and (gasp!) actually learn.

It's kind of interesting.

In fact, I plan to use this technique when I go back to school next semester! I wonder how it works with maths. . .

as i read my chapters i would take notes. it makes the reading longer, but it definitley sinks in more when you're reading it AND writing it out. then you have class notes and book notes to study.

~Thanks Fluffernutter!~

Get enough sleep. Kinda obvious, but when I was under the gun in school, my tiny head always functioned 100x better with two consecutive nights of good sleep.

If you're body's okay with caffeine, studies have proven that it increases your processing skills when test-taking.

I was an English major, so I just made it up as I went along.

For other courses, I put the course book under my pillow and learned through osmosis.

This method got me my 3.78

My best studying lately has been done in my car. At work, during mealtime, I'll drop off my partner at the base and go park somewhere quiet and just read, hilighting as I go. When I'm home, I'll try and read on my couch or at my desk, but inevitably end up out in my driveway in my car. I guess I just like the complete silence it provides me. No distractions.

You should sue! :)

It also outlined other learning techniques, such as "mind maps" and outlines, some of which I learned while studying for the AP US History exam in High School.

I have trouble with putting the "mind map" into practice, because I found that I already do that in my head.

I wonder if pictures will help me with maths. . . I'm always interested in finding new ways to do Calc.

That's a good idea. I'm not really a big fan of studying in the library so I tend to do it at home. It's hard though when I have the TV and the desktop pc staring at me.

I'm gonna have to pull the CD-ROM drive from my laptop before it ruins me.
