I asked these question a while ago in another thread as a joke, but since then it has really started bothering me:

Why is it that when you're driving and looking for an address, you turn down the volume on the radio?

&

Why do you park in a driveway and drive in a parkway?

TOMPOO - It has to do with human's limited ability to multitask. Any activity (even if it's compleltely passive, like listening to the radio) detracts from our ability to focus on the task at hand.

We turn down the radio volume so that we can more fully focus our brain on the primary task ahead of it.

As for why you drive on a parkway and park on a driveway, ask Jerry Seinfeld.

I totally agree with HK...it's just a need to focus more fully on where you're trying to go and how to get there...multitasking is tough!

OK, but why can people study and listen to music, or simply read and listen to music.

Why can you do things that require hand-eye coordination like sports while listening to music.

Or other chores like painting your house or working on your car.

All of these things need a certain amount of concentration. And yes some people can't study with the music on, or can't sleep with the music on, BUT EVERYONE TURNS DOWN THE VOLUME WHEN LOOKING FOR AN ADDRESS!!!!

IT DOESN'T MAKE SENSE!!!!!

Well look at it this way TomPoo...studying and/or reading, painting, or working on your car are all things that are extended tasks, that take a period of time, say in this case at least an hour. As opposed to when you're in your car, when it's more a direct need for the address, or to search for the right road to make a turn on, or whatever. It has more immediate pressure than the other things, and therefore needs more concentration.

For example, you can have music in the background and study, but when taking a test, most people need complete silence...that's why people are so annoyed during an exam when a cell phone goes off or someone makes noise or whatever...so that's what I think :)

Just for the record, numerous studies have shown that people study better, (absorb more information and at a quicker pace and retain it longer) when there are no external distractions such as music!

I've seen those same studies HK, and tend to agree with them...the background noise for me, when I used it, usually just distracted me, but I've known those who do study better with it...so who knows.
