View Full Version : I feel guilty when I sleep.

I wake up every morning with an intense feeling of guilt because of the time I wasted sleeping. I feel like that is time that I could be working or doing school work.
For the record, I am a full-time 5th semester student in college, I carry two majors and have two jobs, child daycare and i'm a webmaster for a Connecticut State University.
This feeling is usually worse if I slept for longer than 7 hours, or if I fall asleep at my desk or on the computer, usually it's a guilty feeling about not working, although sometimes I wake with an awful feeling of dread that I won't be able to get my work in on time or that i'm going to fail school. I know that I shouldn't feel like that and that I probably work too much but I'm not sure if there's another way to deal with this whole mess.

I'd probably feel guilty about sleeping if I ever slept.

I see you have a rather vexing problem. Why don't you sleep on it, and we'll have a chat tomorrow.

This weekend I felt guilty about sleeping. I slept till 4:30 pm on saturday and 3:30pm on sunday. It was getting dark when I woke up. I was all confused. That you should feel guilty for. I certainly do.

I feel guilty after I eat, breathe, blink, pee or poop.
It's only right and it's only natural. Sleep soundly, slappy.

Bob Impact - I'm sure you understand intellectually, that sleep is a physiological need. There is no reason to feel guitly about taking care of your body's needs.
It's not as if you're spending the day in bed, doing nothing. Instead you describe a very VERY active life.
There are only so many hours in a day. You're already doing much more than most. Cut yourself some slack.
What I find disturbing is your sense of dread that you will not do your job on time, or that you will fail school. These types of thoughts are often seen in people who are slightly obsessive.
Obsessiveness need not be a bad thing. In fact it's usually found to some degree in good students and successful people. However, if these thoughts are intrusive or if they start to get into the realm of clinical obsessiveness (especially if coupled with compulsions) there are problems.
You may benefit from insight oriented therapy.

First of all, the feeling doesn't continue throughout the day, and no, I was in therapy and no, I don't have OCD. I've found that Therapy's answer is far too often to shovel drugs down your throat, so i gave up on it.

If you're falling asleep at your desk then that's a sign you NEED sleep! If you don't get much need sleep, you may wind up getting sick.
Just my 2 cents.

BOB IMPACT - I didn't say OCD, I said "slightly obsessive." There's a world of difference. One is a psychopathology, the other is an aspect of personality. (Which is completely seperate from Obsessive Personality Disorder).
If the feeling doesn't persist, than it's not intrusive and may not be problematic.
However, you say you've been to therapy for this, so perhaps it's more intrusive and/or troublesome than you're acknowledging.
Insight oriented therapy is different from psychorphramacological therapy although the latter is used very succesfully to treat a great many problems. Drugs are not always indicated, but at times they're essential.
Insight oriented therapy (in very simple terms) focuses on the underlying reasons why you're engaged in a particular behavior or thought.
