Citizen's Execute??

I read this today in the paper, and I was surprised to read that in the State of N.J. if a person is executed under the Capital Punishment Law, it said that "two citizens press separate buttons to begin the execution" and that neither one of them know what button actually executes the person. It says that "two citizens [are] chosen by the Corrections Department although the specifics on the selection process are kept secret..outside of the Corrections Department no one knows who these two people are".

I was kind of startled to read that citizens do this. I always thought it was a corrections guard or something.

corrections officers etc. also
citizens? It depends on
what they meant by citizens.
Do they mean simply that
non-state residents can't do
it? Non-US residents? Or
do they mean private
citizens?

It didn't state in the paper if they were corrections officers or citizens, it just said "citizens" it mentions that "the specifics on the selection process are kept secret".

By stating "two citizens chosen by a committee from the Corrctions Department", it seems to indicate citizens from outside the CD.

Similar concept to an army firing squad. There is always one blank distributed. That way no one knows for sure if they were the one who killed the guy. Makes it easier for the firing squad.

They actually did a good job of explaining this type of situation in the first season of Oz when the executed Donald Groves. Horde King is right they give a blank or fake so that the people who do it dont live with the guilt of killing someone because they never know if they had a blank or not
