It began when they started enforcing helmets, knee and elbow pads while riding bikes and skateboards and rollerskates. Why this had to be made into a law is beyond me.

But now whats worse is the fact that you cant play dodgeball because it teaches kids to pick out the weaker kids so that only the strong survive or that you cant keep score in little league games because it makes the losers feel bad. And who are the ones coming up with this the same P***sies who used to get eliminated first or were never picked to play on any teams. If we dont teach kids in school that winning is important and if you try hard and work at things eventually you will be able to win and succeed. But now it is more important to medicate the hyper then get them exercise and its easier to have kids not play sports so that they can become even bigger puss**s

None of you realize it, but you are all part of a continuing cycle. Your parents were at one time considered weak by your grandparents. This "back in the good ol' days" silliness is pointless. Parents in the 1950s considered their children undiscliplined just because they listened to Bill Haley. You should thank G-d that history is not static. I find it very intersting that adults believe in strong discipline for kids. I find it very convenient that these adults have no difficulty in advocating a program of punishment when they will not be subject to it, (e.g. Sean Hannity believe in corporal punishment in schools). It is the same stupidity that leads adults to call for a military draft, knowing full well that they would not be subject to such forced conscription.

Ron or Fez discussed how silly it is that 30 year old men still wear Star Trek/Star Wars outfits. How is that any different than the members of this board who are over the age of 30 who are fanatical about listening to the radio show?

I'm listening to the replay of that discussion right now, and the last guy before break brought up Video games. And now that I think of it, that's actually a very good point. It's not the ultimate cause, but I think it's a large cog in the works of the machine that's turning our country into a bunch of pussies.

I UESD TO go outside and play with my friends. I read books a lot more then than now. I had an imagination. Then, my parents, Who I DO NOT want to blame at all, bought me the nintendo. And from there, my grades and general interest in these other things declined.

Now I'm not sure if I would have gone like this even without Nintendo, but my generation is full of overweight, directionless people. And a lot of them sit on the internet or Playstation all dday, and regard work as just s nessecary evil, or means to get their next toy.

We do need to kick ourselves in the balls and become tough again.

I have kids, and it is difficult. However, the problem with most parents is that they're too fucking lazy and scared to actually discipline. When my kids act like assholes, I tell them to stop acting like assholes. When they fight with each other I let them duke it out until they draw blood or break something. When they get hurt, I tell them to either walk it off or let me take them to the hospital.

Too many parents baby their kids, and raise fucking pussies that can barely wipe their asses by themselves much less function in society and be productive and independant adults.

Why do so many people in their fucking late twenties to mid thirties still live at home with Mommy and Daddy? It's because their parents allow it. Money's tight- get a roomate or another job. Get the fuck out of the house or have your Mom open wide and let you sleep in her uterus every night.

I think it started with all the divorced parents.

Kids growing up with there mothers while the dead beat dads take off on them.

They never get the time and teachings a father can give.

My parents divorced when I was 10, and I already had the fear and respect of my father in me by that age, but my younger brothers never had that. They never really had to full quality time of living and knowing what a father really is. My mother is a push over, and my father felt so bad about not living with them that he spoiled them rotten.

I can remember going to my dads every other weekend, and the first thing we would do is hit up Toys R Us.

It got to the point where my brothers never truly respect my mother OR my father. They might care for them but if they didnt get there way, or the toy they wanted they would scream, cry, and make huge scenes.

Now my younger brother is failing out of high school, cutting every class, and basiclly running all over my poor mother. There's nothing she can do to stop him and it's really sad.

My other middle brother is a spoiled fucking brat who needs everything he asks for, AND gets it because to this day he'll put up a big scene, start huge fights with my mother and father and it's just sick what these babies are growing into.

PLUS both of my brothers are these faggy types that need all the in style clothing, there hair has to be perfect, trimming there eyebrows. It really makes me sick.

It's not even that a lot of parents won't discipline their kids, it's the other people can't if they are victims of the child's misbehaving. If a kid runs up and kicks me in the shin, I should be able to yell at him to stop (Doesn't have to be profane), and drag him/her over to their parents and explain what happened. Now, if I even glare at a child, the parents are ready to pounce all over me.

My parents rarely hit me. I can count all the times it happened on one hand, and they never exceeded a spanking or a single smack to the mouth. But it was enough to make me realize what I should and shouldn't do. I never feared my parents, but I respected them. And it worked.

Seriously, the 90s will be famous for being the age of the "sensitive guy", but that started cuz the kids from the 70s and 80s came from households where they were raised more by their mothers, and all the peace & love from the 60s was still lingering. Combine those 2 things and you end up with the guys and girls that want everyone to "just get along". And not that there's anything wrong with that. I'm glad I'm not a racist, and I'm glad I'm not a misogynist, but I'll be the first to admit that I didn't get enough discipline as a kid and as a result, I'm maybe "too" sensitive.

The Pussigfication Of America may have started with the Civil Rights Movement. Again, not that people of color (and women) didn't deserve equal rights, but it has led to everyone and his mother thinking they deserve things they haven't earned.

Same thing with frivilous lawsuits. It's easier to sit back and collect on a settlement than it is to get out there and earn a living.

We're a fat, lazy country, but like someone earlier pointed out, it's cyclical. Someday, things will settle back down and we'll incorporate all this lovey dovey shit into a more conservative lifestyle and somewhere inbetween, our kid's kids will scrape their knees and get hit in the face with a dodgeball, and it'll be OK.

I'm with PanterA on this one. The number of children growing up with no father figure is staggering these days.

When I was younger, EVERY SINGLE kid in school had a mother and a father that were together. Divorce was unheard of, let alone single mothers who never married.

I'm not saying single women aren't capable of being good parents or that people shouldn't get divorced, but it does have an effect on the children. They go one of two ways - they either become maniacal juvenille delinquents or they become mama's boys.

I saw it in my many years of coaching hockey. Every year, more and more kids were from homes where the parents had split. Some were incorrigible and I'd bet dollars to donuts that they're in jail today. Others were so feminine it drove me crazy. I had never encountered junior high school boys who were afraid to get hit or couldn't take a little ball busting from their teammates. It was unfathomable to me, and remains so to this day.

Then when they get to be adolescents, the parents who cared so much about taking contact sports away totally forget about their kids. Actually, in addition to divorce, I think a major factor in the pussification of America is the increased emphasis placed on work. Nowadays, in most families, even if a kid has both parents, he or she doesn't see them most of the time because both parents work long hours. As a result, parents feel guilty that they don't see their kid that much. <P>
As such, when they get home, the parents are scared that their kid will hate them. So, they let the kid do whatever the kid wants to do - afraid to discipline the kid and get the kid angry. <P>
Thus, a nation of self-indulgent, whiny brats is born. Kids expect to get whatever they want without working for it. <P>

I don't know if this is relevant or not, but when people with thick southern accents come to my token booth and ask me how they can get to Ground Zero drives me up the friggin' wall. This was a tragedy, and these damn tourists and out of towners want to see it. It kills me. You don't know how many times I wanted to say something to them, but didn't.

Superclerk its not relevant and just because tourists want to see an area where one of the top 3 events in our country took place does not make them bad. Its really more out of respect maybe for the people, just because you arent from N.Y. or D.C. you can still be affected by what happens.

You should take the roll of the responsible one, let them know how they act is unacceptable then beat the living piss out of them the next time they do it. When my younger brother started F'n up in high school i didnt wait for my parents to take care of it, i did it myself. Tell him no high school means no life in 5 years because w/out something simple like a high school degree you have zippy chance in the real world. And if he doesnt get it then just kick his ass till he does.

The early 90s was the age of the SNAG-- the Sensitive New Age Guy.

That really started I think when Alan Alda started to whussyify "Hawkeye Pierce" on M*A*S*H* The character went from a regular gin drinking, skirt chaser guy to the Women's Lib's image of what the "Alpha" man should be. I'm sure there are other TV/movie characters as well but what Alda did to the lead character of maybe the hottest show of the day was just despicable and really started that trend of "sensitive guy" in the pop-culture

Basically Alda took one component of Hawkeye's personality and heightend that and let all the "bad" qualities (drinking, womanizing) fall by the wayside to the point where it wasn't the same character anymore

I think all this started when we were told we had to be politicly correct. I'm not saying people should be abused or smaller kids should take a beating (I was one of those kids) but not everything in life goes the way we want it to. And to pamper a child from the begining of his or her life is not going to help in the long run. What happens when that person dosen't get the job they want or the girl they like? The real world is not always kind and kids need to understand that. <P>
My second thought is that some of the most realistic things on this thred were posted by Silera. She actually has kids and knows things from experience. I think she should give lessons to some of the pussified parents out there. (by the way nice ass.) <P>

it think that the pussification of America started right after world war II. Once America became a superpower, Americans started out showing our power and manliness, but slowly progressed to being sympathetic and caring because America needed to contrast themselves with Russia's harshness during the Cold War. We needed to show the world that we were the "good guys", so we became pussified {cough, Jimmy Carter, cough}.

And plus, Reagan had to leave after 8 years, just when an assertive president was starting to work out. Stupid H.W.

In my opinion, the pussification started when some brilliant child psychologist said don't hit your kids. The idea was not to pass on a system of physical violence to your kids. Somewhere along the way, it began to be interpreted as "children need to be protected from EVERYTHING!"
That's a very tall order and since mom is working and dad is working even harder in order to have a SUV, Satellite dish, Timeshare lifestyle, everyone else has to do it for the parents. That means laws that require helmets to ride a bicycle, the banning of tag. The blasphemy of "Safe Halloween" in bright school gymnasiums. And to protect their little feelings, no loser baseball. If this isn't stopped, kids will never learn that there are real contests in life as well as winners and losers.

Two reasons for the pussification:

1)Political Correctness: God forbid anyone say anything anymore to anyone, ever. The inane, the irrelevant, the utter and distint minority has taken over. My predictions: within a generation the words 'under God' will be absent from the 'Pledge of Allegiance;' 'turduckin will be replaced by tofurkey,' lest we offend the atheist vegans out there.
2) Lawyers: responsible for the upholding of mindless and profligate litigation. McDonald's being sued by halfwits who didn't realize that the menu isn't good for you? God help us all. And I have no love for the fast food industry, but I have even less for millions of people that will no longer take responsibility for their actions, and for a legal lobby that supports such behavior.
