Hey, they lowered all the standards
Actually, New York has raised all of the standards in the past 5 or 6 years. We have the New York State Learning Standards as well as the ELAs. The problem is, with all of these standardized tests being administered, the teachers are forced to teach based on the content of the test. We would love to do creative teaching with our students, but with these damn tests, it makes it extremely difficult. There are even questions in this state about voucher systems and charter schools. As a special educator, I am glad that such attention is being paid to our students with needs. Up until the 70s, these students have been mistreated, misunderstood, or neglected. I agree that those who are gifted/talented should get their own Individual Education Plans as well. Why not map out specific goals for those who excel? Why keep them "behind" with the general population?
Anyhow, when you look at research reports, make sure you look at the whole picture. What people were part of the testing sample?
Was the test valid? What is the reliability factor?
