Pica

Patient this week had (among other things) a condition called Pica.

According to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Pica is defined as:
"...persistent eating of nonnutritive substance." Infants typically with paint, plaster, string, hair or cloth. Older children may eat animal droppings, sand, insects, leaves or pebbles. There is no aversion to food.

When I was in college, there was seriously this lady would hang out at the Laundromat and eat the lint from the lint screens.

The closest thing I've ever gotten to Pica was toenails. If you had to (or do) have one Pica "guilty pleasure", what is it, or what would it be?

i bite my finger nails.....and sometimes the dead skin around it. BUT i never swallowed it!

When I was younger I would make mud pies that looked so good i literally had to stop myself from eating it.

I'm also sure there are tiny shards of plastic in my belly from pen caps...Oh and I would chew on my pencils too.

I wont eat and onion but i'll chew up my fingers. strange.

I was always fascinated by hair eaters. Usually chicks with long hair who will chew on the ends. Makes you wonder if they have a trichnobezoar.

I've heard this too. I've heard that they also sometimes crave gravel. Apparently it stems from a mineral deficiency.

I've heard of this, too. I read that in the Mississippi they had a problem with women eating the sides of roads. Fucked up.

By the way, "pica" comes from the Latin word for magpie, a bird known for its indiscriminate appetite. Damn boids - dey gives me da asthma.

Yes. Some of the papers I have read about Pica in adults involve women in certain African tribes that eat dirt, specifically "dirt" rich in clay, a source of calcium, which is otherwise lacking in their diet. Interestingly, they are unaware of why they crave the dirt, even though it winds up being highly beneficial to them. Kind of like how salmon know how to return to their exact spawning grounds each year, or certain species of birds know to fly south in winter. Or why guys like football and beer.

It is also important to differentiate Pica from mental disorders involving the consumption of non nutritive substances that arise out of lack of impulse control, (like people with Trichotillomania who compulsively eat their hair) or Paraphillias, which involve sexual urges and/or fantasies, a specific type of which involves the eating (phagia) or drinking (dipsia) of non nutritive substances, like coprophagia or urodipsia. Specifically: eating poo or drinking pee.

Severe OCD several years. 27 yr old fem. Currently SSRI, changed to Celexa added Wellbutrin and Klonopin. <P>
She was eating wool pills from sweaters and the covers of shoelaces (aglets). <P>

Perhaps we can start another thread about clinical stuff or just IM or email me. It's interesting, but my intent was to initiate a discussion of Pica-esque experiences of people without Pica. I find it really interesting.

But in answer to your question, Axis II no MRDD, but definitely OCD and history of neglect. Pica not diagnosed until now.

So bottom line is...

I just remembered since I eat Carmex just cause I love it, that would be Pica-esque as well.
