A buck and a half to go pretty much anywhere in the city is pretty damn good. Really wouldn't be the end of the world if they raised it.

live in Midtown and I take
the subway all the time. It
could be like London where

Too bloody true! The average cost of "Tube" travel is more than double the MTA fare. It is also far less reliable in London.
Coupled with the fact the cost of living, houses etc is 30% more and the average wage is 30% less than here.
