I overheard this story that made me think about all of the energy put into "making the money" and competing with the Jones'.
There was a successful guy who lived in N.Y. who was working 14 hour days, got about 5 hours sleep, lived on take-out food and got to a point that he was so completely exhausted and depressed he ended up on antidepressants and anti-anxiety pills. He decided at that point to go on vacation to the Bahamas.
While there, he was fascinated by a fisherman who went out fishing every day for himself and his family. He always seemed happy and content when he talked with him.
The man from N.Y. talked with him one day and said "I have a phd in finance and I could teach you how to make a lot of money. First, you will need to save enough money to buy another boat. Then you can start selling your fish to that one elegant restaurant on the island. Then as you accumulate more money, you can buy more boats, and sell to every restaurant on the island and soon you will become very rich.
The poor fisherman asked the frazzled New Yorker "what would I do with all that money? What would you most like to do?" The New Yorker said "I don't know, I guess, the only thing in the world I would love to do is to go out on a small boat and go fishing everyday".
