Gangbusters???!?!?!

I have heard this saying a few times and I absolutely HATE IT! It makes no sense.What can be so great that its absolutely gangbusters?

It refers to the gangbusters of the 1920's. Just think of The Untouchables. They went after Capone with great spirit and intent and didnt let anything get in their way. So when something's "going like gangbusters" thats what it means. I think its on its way out though, much like "sellin like hotcakes".

The phrase "to come on like Gangbustes" first made it's first recorded apearance in the English language in the 1940's. It's from the radio-drama Gangbusters (1937-1957), presumably refering to the show's opening which was a cacophony of sirens, screams, gunshots and music.

Sorry, i'm just fascinated by that kind of stuff with the word origins and the history of our language.
