We had this debate about BBS's and Chat rooms in my Information Systems Theory class this week. I personally lean toward a Subculture because I view this board as a subsection of American Radio listeners who are unified by a single show.
If you can't remember the differences, here's some definitions:
Microcosm: A small, representative system having analogies to a larger system in constitution, configuration, or development.
Subculture:
1. A cultural subgroup differentiated by status, ethnic background, residence, religion, or other factors that functionally unify the group and act collectively on each member.
2. One culture of microorganisms derived from another.

based on these definitions, i'd have to say that it is a subculture also, but i think that the board could definetly be considered a microcosm also because of its diversity

Both terms apply.
However, it is more accurate to say that we interact on a micro, mezzo and macro level.

I prefer to think of it as a Speakeasy.

i'd say it's more of a subculture, we're all united around one solitary radio show
i've read a lot about how subcultures are being repressed because they represent threats to the establishment... i think our letter writing campaign is proof of that

Is that why I have to type "Jitterbug" when I log in?
