The Problem with End of Year Top Ten Lists is that they are not compiled by Ron and Fez Board Members.
TOP TEN ALBUMS OF 2002 (AND NO JOKES ABOUT NOT BUYING ONE CAUSE YOU ONLY DOWNLOAD)
Wilco - Yankee Hotel Foxtrot
The greatest band in the world keeps getting better.
Beck - Sea Change
The guy's good. When he's heartbroken, he's even better.

Uncategorizable and phenomenal.
Drive By Truckers -Southern Rock Opera
Send me your address I will buy it for you. Southern Rock lives!
Coldplay - A Rush of Blood To The Head
A rush of great music.

Treepeople begat Built to Spill begat an amazing solo album.

I'm pretty much with Kaga on most of his picks, but I'd throw in The Streets' "Original Pirate Material", The Liars' debut album, The Reigning Sound's "Time Bomb High School", Black Rebel Motorcycle Club's debut, ...And You Will Know Us By The Trail of Dead's latest, Arlo's "Stab The Unstoppable Hero", Idlewild's latest, Doves' "Last Broadcast", Brendan Benson's "Lapelaco", "Behind The Music" by SOundtrack of Our Lives, Hot Hot Heat's debut album and Paul Westerberg's "Stereo/Mono" somewhere.
As for best re-issue, Rhino outdid themselves with the Elvis Costello re-prints, and the new edition of the Violent Femmes' first is nothing short of spectacular.
I actually loathe getting into these sorts of discussions, because I buy hundreds of CD's each year, and it's so hard to pick just ten. So my post will be edited probably eight times a day for the next week.

In no particular order:
Steve Earle- Jerusalem: His "Political" album is just what this country needs right now. Remember, Woody Guthrie loved America too.
Joan Osborne- How Sweet it is: a collection of beautiful covers. I simply love it.
Beck- Sea Change: How did he not slit his wrists while recording this? depression at its best.
John Hyatt- the Tiki Bar is Open: The album is the "anti-Sea Change". Just makes me feel good all over.
Dar Williams- Out there live: if you haven't heard of her yet, you will.
Ryan Adams- Demolition: alt Country at its best. I used to think he would never out do Whiskeytown. I was wrong.
Los lobos- Good Morning Aztlan: Listen and love. They are more than just "La Bamba"
Wilco- YHF: Of course
Elvis Presley- 1 Hits: It's Elvis!!
Ron Sexsmith- Cobblestone Runway: Very intellingent and lyrical, very pleasing voice.

Loving the whole rehashing of the late 60's garage and indie movement, I fell intot he trap of The Vines. By far the WORST piece of scheit I have heard in a long time. Just very uninspiring boring unmitigated crap. They will hopefully gone in a year and real bands with heart can prevail. I just really really HATE them!

So I found out after I bought the record. I was reading press on them and like most bands when I hear a little bit of a buzz I buy and fail miserably. I don't know why but it always happens.

It's quite good, but suprisingly soulless and polished. Considering his fans were ranting that this was going to show up Ryan Adams' "sell out" solo efforts of late, Miller really went out of his way to pretty himself up and make a "safe" record. Oh well, I still like it.
And Fluffer, stick with Soundtrack of Our Lives. That is all that needs to be said.

Wilco is by far the most
over-hyped band since
E.M.F. It's yuppie office
cubicle rock
Yikes. How did EMF get in there?
I agree that their newest is a bit overrated. But you can't poo-poo an album as stunning as "Summer Teeth". Maybe you should give Uncle Tupelo a try.
(which is the same things
as saying The Strokes or
The Vines or the Hives) one
of the most egregious, are
just warmed over late-70's
punk rock a la the
Buzzcocks/Sex Pistols.
Boring. The Hives, Vines and Strokes do sound too much like a lot of other bands, yet they actually don't sound anything like each other. Just because they all start with "The", doesn't make it so. And the only ones that could vaguely be accused of being "punk" are The Vines because half the time they're ripping of Nirvana, and The Strokes, because they're ripping of The Velvet Underground. The Hives are rooted firmly in the 60's garage style mixed with early Stones, while The White Stripes try so hard to be cutesy and "blues-y", it hurts. Yet there's nary any "punkishness" to be heard.
Personally, I enjoy all the above artists, but anyone who buys into the hype that they're "saving" rock 'n' roll needs to be bricked in the face. I like the above bands because they seem to have fun, it's at least not nu-metal or bubblegum, and it makes me want to dance/drink/screw. Works for me. But they ain't "saving" shit, and will be gone after another one or two albums each.
Oh,and when trying to describe something as "punk," please don't use The Sex Pistols, the orignal boy band that started it all. And please don't compare The Pistols to the insanely awesome Buzzcocks, who are actually good. It can get people confused.

I take issue with a lot of Chairman Kaga's picks but the most glaring are Wilco and White Stripes. Wilco is by far the most over-hyped band since E.M.F. It's yuppie office cubicle rock As for The White Stripes (which is the same things as saying The Strokes or The Vines or the Hives) one of the most egregious, are just warmed over late-70's punk rock a la the Buzzcocks/Sex Pistols.

Ouch! You just took out the ones I was going to admit to listening to & liking. :-(

One of the few, meager amusements of getting old (for me, anyway) is that every few years there is always a band or two that reinvents punk pop. This year it's White Stripes & The Hives, before that Green Day; Rancid et al. I never miss the opportunity at work to bother the punkish summer students with the In my day we had the Buzzcocks/Pistols/Clash who invented this stuff speech. (I bore the hip-hop kids with my stories of seeing Kurtis Blow & Grand Master Flash.)

Anyway, to gild the lily in proving my cultural irrelevance, let me introduce these 2002 geezer albums into the discussion:

Bruce Springsteen - The Rising

Elvis Costello - When I Was Cruel

I liked 'em both. There, I said it & there's no going back now. Condescend at your convenience.

Point heard, understood
and respected. (Although,
the Pistols a Eastenders/
past the Docklands of
London came before the
Manchester based
Buzzcocks who attribute
thier influence to above
said band per Alex Cox's
brilliant book "London's
Dreaming".
Brilliant book. And I'm not down-playing the influence of the Pistols, I just think hardly, if any, bands these days actually end up sounding like them. Most so-called "punk" bands today are more influenced sonically by the New York punk sound than naything else these days. Hell, basically ALL of the good British bands from '77 until about '85 were directly inspired by the Pistols to get things started.
And I personally love the Pistols' one album. It's a great pop album. All of the best of the orignal punk class (The Clash, Costello, Buzzcocks, Ramones, Undertones, et al) made, above all else, some of the greatest POP records of the last 30 years. I just get frustrated with the Pistols because far too many people equate their image in their final year as what was most important about them. And that namely means that people instantly think Sid Vicious, whom I loathe. The original modern-day poseur, Vicious destroyed the punk scene by happily becoming its poster boy, and he destroyed a great band by joining smacked out of his mind and not being able to play a note. I'm not sad he's dead at all.

I take issue with a lot of Chairman Kaga's picks
You give me too much credit. Don't take issue; I didn't steal all your precious albums and lock you in a room and force you to listen to Wilco et. al.
I am going to check out your picks, I haven't heard of most of them. I don't know what kind of musical genres they fall into, but my collection has its share of everything from Slint to Neutral Milk Hotel, Tortoise to Thomas Jefferson Slave Apartments, Soft Boys to Dead Boys, Stereolab, Silver Jews, Gobblehoof, Celtic Frost, Spiritualized, Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, heck I have everything.
I love Wilco. Not loving Wilco to me is a thought as perverse as not liking the sun.
May your 2003 be filled with whatever music makes you happy.

White Blood Cells was released in 2001.
Dude, how about posting your top ten instead of pointing this out. While you're at it, please contact our good friends at the Village Voice, Rolling Stone, Spin, CME, Blender, etc. who all picked the album as a top ten for 2002. I'm looking at my copy now, and it says (c) 2002 Third Man records.
I can argue that the first Silkworm album came out a year before it says on the cd (cause it was released first on vinyl)...whomever the powers that be are, they determined WBC a 2002 album.
And the same can be said about Pavement's Slanted and Enchanted, released two years before it made top ten lists, but still it is considered a 1992 release, (re-released in 2002 of course).

Rufus Wainwright:
Cigarettes & Chocolate Milki hate to be a pain in the ass, but the name of the album you're referring to is "poses". cigarettes and chocolate milk is a song on there (and there's also that great reprise which is really better than the regular version). also, the album came out in 2001, but it's great and i'm glad it's up here now

I did some more research and you were correct about 2001 WBC release date, but based my list on the 2002 top ten list criteria of the music magazines.
I can easily exchange WBC with Paul Westerberg's excellent comeback Stereo/Mono. Also saw him live twice, he was great and it was intimate, but I longed for a band backing him up.
As one of the world's hugest Mats fans (my favorite band of all time), I really hope Axl releases Tommy from contractual obligations (after all he sure hasn't released the long overdue GnR album) and the long anticipated and rumored Replacements reunion tour takes place.
The Strokes and Stripes were great live. Wilco disappointed me this year, probably due to high expectations and the fact that I saw them in places with Johnny Come Lately types who had never heard of A.M. much less Uncle Tupelo. Jeff seemed really burned out as well.
The excellent Ryan Adams disappointed me with his preciousness and those Gap ads. There is such a thing as believing the hype too much. Ryan loves The White Stripes. Demolition was good, but not a top ten for me.
I can't stop listening to Pavement. SM's solo was great, but the reissue reaffirmed why they are one of my top bands. I would so love to see them get together again. I can't believe S&E is now 10 years old!
Rush out and get the Slow Century DVD and the S&E reissue even if you have the original. It is remastered, has 2 discs of goodies, outtakes Jon Peel sessions and decent liner notes, and was only $13.99.

I saw the Bowery Westerberg show. It was amazing. It is supposed to make up the bulk of his live dvd. It would've been even better with a full band. I agree about Tommy getting released from GnR and I understand that Paul is hoping that will happen too.

For me, Wilco was one of those shows that started slowly and built up as it went. I saw the Roseland show in Oct.

Ryan Adams' problem is that he speaks like a high school girl. From what I read on nme.com, he doesn't have any love for the stripes anymore. Nuclear is one of my fave songs of the year.

I finally got around to SM's solo disc. It's easily better than the last 2 Pavement albums.I was a huge Pavement fan. I have to pick up the S&E reissue.

Another album I left off that was great was the Ash disc, good hard pop.

According to Tommy, Paul pretty much "blew it" when it comes to a 'Mats reunion. He says that he was all geared up to do it, but because Paul starting taking potshots at G&R and Tommy in interviews, he got pissed off. The two aren't talking now, and Tommy's latest words on the matter made it sound like he wouldn't join Paul onstage any time in the near future. Which makes me very, very sad.
And while "Demolition" isn't a classic album, the fact that it's just a collection of songs that fell along the side from his various side projects and it's still THAT good makes Ryan Adams OK in my book. At this point in his career he has three stellar solo albums and four beautiful Whiskeytown albums under his belt. People need to stop taking shots and realize how awesome this guy is.

Deviating from the thread (sorry)- some things I didn't like...
I didn't go for the slew of "post-punk" inspired American bands this year: The Walkmen, Radio 4, Interpol, French Kicks and all bands who seemed to claim everyone (especially Joy Division, Go4, and PiL) as an influence except for the likes of Spoon who seem to be a big influence on these guys anyway. Fuckin' NYU brats, the lot of them...
Also was bothered by Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Hot Hot Heat, The Hives, Moonie Suzuki, and many other bands featuring the same old sound and ironic (or maybe not) false enthusiasm.
Hated also MTV Punk: particularly Good Charlotte. Awful, woeful garbage.
Rap, as usual, failed to interest me. This "Wanksta" bullshit from the new hyped guy (50 Cents?! What a name.) is pitiful. Can't wait until ODB gets out of prison.
As far as what I liked: Doves' album was massive for me at first, but seems a little flat now...oh, well.
Oasis (I still think they were the best band of the 90s) continue to embarass themselves- hey, wait a minute, I'm supposed to be talking about things I *liked*.
Hmm, wasn't a great year. BMRC and AYWKU... managed to come up with some rockin' tunes!
Also Van Morrison made another timeless album in Down The Road while dipshits with "angular moptops" were too busy collecting Chamelons imports to make anything decent! (One last potshot, come on)

It would have been an even better year if Morrissey would just accept a goddamn record contract. I don't buy this "oh, everyone seems to have forgotten me" shitck for a second. Take the money and run, dammit! The new songs are glorious and I want them on my stereo...and where's the east coast tour? I didn't get my fill of weeping, shirt-rending, and flower-tossing this year. MOZ, COME HOME. All is forgiven...

Oh, mozfan, out of curiosity...is it preferable to have a radio and TV clogged with nu-metal and grunge-lite, or all these derivative, garage-sounding retro-moppets? I'm going with the latter, mainly just because if I hear one more person wailing about their daddy didn't buy them a Nintendo and a Pepsi, I'll simply scream until I explode.

Rap, as usual, failed to interest me.
Go with the Brits. The Streets, Roots Manuva and "The Extra Yard" comp are going to save hip-hop, and they're from the UK.
And I know I said it before, but the albums put out by The Soundtrack of Our Lives and Idlewild this past year simply must be heard...they MUST.
