View Full Version : How can I get out of jury duty?

I received a notice for jury duty. It was actually sent to my parents' house, where I haven't lived for almost a year. What would happen if I just didn't show? I'm kinda locked into work that day, and would be leaving a lot of people in the lurch if I bailed out for a jury screening.

under certain circumstances, you may get a postponement. legally, your empployer has to let you off work, and you have to go.
It's your civic duty. pretty lame to try and avoid it.

The best thing you can do is try to get out of it as soon as possible, rather than being selected and wasting more than one day. I had to do it 2 years ago and on the first day, they asked if anyone had any religious or ethical beliefs which would interfere with being an objective juror. I said I didn't believe I should be partly responsible for deciding the fate of a man's life, being that I was only 21 and didn't think I knew enough about life myself to be judging anyone else. They let me go.

I have no problem with jury duty itself, it's just that if I actually got it two weeks ago when it was delivered, it would be easier. Now it's less than two weeks away, and the holiday schedules are pretty locked. It's do-able, but like I said, it'll leave a lot of people twisting in the wind.
Watch, knowing my luck, I'll get chosen for the sniper trial and be stuck with that for the next couple of months.

I was on a civic case a while back. This dumb old bitch slipped in a laundrymat and sued. This one guy asked if the laundrymat had insurance. The lawyers are not allowed to tell you that, and he was the first dismissed.
I ended up being on the jury and the trial was exactly one day and they settled. She was lucky, I wasn't gonna give her shit.

You said you haven't lived at your parents house for years. If you now live and pay taxes in another county you simply need to call and let them no you no longer reside there. You must be a citizen of the county you ar called to duty in. This is the case only with county jurisdriction.

during the interview process, you can tell them about your job, and how dependent they are on you. they may excuse you for that.

If your Drivers license is not at thay address then you dont have to go . Then you have proof that you dont live there and you didnt get the letter.
Or you can say your friends with a bondsman and you think everyone is guilty. Oh wait then we would actually have to be friends.... Wanna play BoBo and Mrs. Fez? Im BoBo of cource then we can be friends.

It's become harder to get out of jury duty in NY. Even attorneys are not exempt (except for those who reside in Nassau :)).
Off the top of my head, the other reasons to be excused from jury duty are:
1. Over 70 years old
2. Jury duty service w/in past 2 years.
3. Volunteer firefighters and ambulance workers
4. Person who is caretaker of kids under 10.
5. Person who is caretaker to disabled (and whos health would be threatened if left alone).
6. Doctors/Dentist/RN/Clergy
7. An attorney (Not exempt in NYC)
8. A sole proprietor of a business that would close if he served.
9. Totally disabled.
You can always get a postponement from jury duty but except for those who meet the above criteria it's very difficult to be excused.
Saying that all are guilty or innocent or that you can't be impartial (used to be a favorite easy way out) is scrutinized by the judge now. If it's not legitimate, you could be held in contempt. Those who read b/w the lines might infer from this that it pays to go in knowing what you'll say and have a cover story for it.

Didn't this work for Sarah Silverman? Only difference is she went with the Asians. Perhaps you could expand?

I have done that many times and have not gotten in trouble, but I know sooner or later my luck will run out. I live in Nassau county and my parents live in Suffolk. So, what I was doing for a while was when it came to my Nassau address, I mailed it back saying I moved to Suffolk. Then, a few years later it would come to Suffolk, and Id mail it back saying I moved to Nassau. I had them going like that for like 15 years. Then, I realized they did not send the letters registered main, so how do they know I even got it? So I started throwing them out. Then, last time I sent it in legit, and they had me on standby, and I waited the week and they did not call my number. Now, I just got the jury questionnaire, and I sent it in. I'll see what happens. I hate the idea of having it go. My sister lives in Queens, maybe next time I will say I moved to NY City! Hahahahahah
